WH doesn't trust Hegseth to pick his own chief of staff

Exasperated by the turmoil that has dogged Pete Hegseth’s office in recent weeks, the White House will block the US defense secretary’s choice of chief of staff and select a candidate of its own, according to two people familiar with the matter.
Hegseth had suggested giving the chief of staff position to Marine Col Ricky Buria after the first person in the role, Joe Kasper, left last month in the wake of a contentious leak investigation that brought the ouster of three other senior aides.

But the White House has made clear to Hegseth that Buria will not be elevated to become his most senior aide at the Pentagon, the people said, casting Buria as a liability on account of his limited experience as a junior military assistant and his recurring role in internal office dramam

“Ricky will not be getting the chief position,” one of the people directly familiar with deliberations said. “He doesn’t have adequate experience, lacks the political chops and is widely disliked by almost everyone in the White House who has been exposed to him.”

On April 28, the Truman was forced to make a hard turn at sea to avoid incoming Houthi fire, several U.S. officials said. The move contributed to the loss of one of the Super Hornets, which was being towed at the time and fell overboard. That same day, dozens of people were killed in a U.S. attack that hit a migrant facility controlled by the Houthis, according to the group and aid officials.

Then on May 4, a Houthi ballistic missile evaded Israel’s aerial defenses and struck near Ben-Gurion International Airport outside Tel Aviv.

On Tuesday, two pilots aboard another Super Hornet, again on the Truman, were forced to eject after their fighter jet failed to catch the steel cable on the carrier deck, sending the plane into the Red Sea.

By then, Mr. Trump had decided to declare the operation a success.

Houthi officials and their supporters swiftly declared victory, too, spreading a social media hashtag that read “Yemen defeats America.”

    MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

The White House's Red Sea strike campaign was designed to last 8-10 months, according to the Times; it was called off with a truce after less than two, even though the Houthis continued to launch attacks on Israel. The reasons for the shortened campaign went beyond missile inventories.

The Houthis turned out to be difficult to combat. During the operation, Houthi attacks forced the carrier USS Harry S. Truman to take sudden evasive action at least once, resulting in the loss of an F/A-18 fighter over the side. In action over Yemen, high-tech U.S. forces never established full command of the airspace: The Houthis' rudimentary air defense systems took down about half a dozen MQ-9 Reaper drones, nearly hit several F-16 fighters, and forced one advanced F-35 stealth strike fighter to make evasive maneuvers. And even after weeks of U.S. airstrikes, the group retained some residual ability to carry out long-range ballistic missile attacks.

"They [the Houthis] took tremendous punishment. And, you know, you could say there's a lot of bravery there, that it was amazing what they took," said President Donald Trump, discussing the ceasefire last week.

Recent evidence suggests that the group is rearming and rebuilding, and it continues to launch ballistic missiles at targets in Israel, including three attempted attacks reported earlier this week. Even attacks on shipping still appear to be on the table: In a statement Thursday, Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said that until Israel ends its operation in Gaza, the group will keep up a "maritime navigation ban in the Red and Arabian Seas."

    facts keep dribbling out

A hacker who breached the communications service used by former Trump national security adviser Mike Waltz earlier this month intercepted messages from a broader swathe of American officials than has previously been reported, according to a Reuters review, potentially raising the stakes of a breach that has already drawn questions about data security in the Trump administration.

Reuters identified more than 60 unique government users of the messaging platform TeleMessage in a cache of leaked data provided by Distributed Denial of Secrets, a U.S. nonprofit whose stated mission is to archive hacked and leaked do ents in the public interest. The trove included material from disaster responders, customs officials, several U.S. diplomatic staffers, at least one White House staffer and members of the Secret Service. The messages reviewed by Reuters covered a roughly day-long period of time ending on May 4, and many of them were fragmentary.

DDoSecrets publishes 410 GB of heap dumps, hacked from TeleMessage's archive server

    ...
There's a lot of background, so here's a quick timeline of events with relevant links:

    • March: Then-national security advisor Mike Waltz invited a journalist into a Signal group where they planned war crimes. This led to Congressional hearings about Trump officials using Signal groups to discuss classified information.
    • May 1: Waltz (the day he was demoted from position of national security advisor) was photographed using TM SGNL, a modified version of Signal made by TeleMessage. He had texts up with Tusli Gabbard, JD Vance, and Marco Rubio.
    • May 3: I published the source code of the TM SGNL to GitHub.
    • May 4: TeleMessage got hacked, which I reported in 404 Media with Joseph Cox.
    • May 5: TeleMessage got hacked again by someone else, as NBC News reported.
    • May 6: I published analysis of the TM SGNL source code, along with some of the hacked data, that prove the TeleMessage lied about its products supporting end-to-end encryption.
    • May 18: I published details about the TeleMessage server's vulnerability in WIRED. TLDR: if anyone on the internet loaded the URL archive.telemessage.com/management/heapdump, they would download a Java heap dump from TeleMessage's archive server, containing plaintext chat logs, among other things.

Now, DDoSecrets has published 410 GB of these TeleMessage heap dumps. Here's the DDoSecrets description of the release:

Pentagon investigating whether Hegseth tried to cover up

This is the second Pentagon investigation on this, I think

The Defense Department Inspector General is now investigating whether Pete Hegseth attempted to cover up his use of Signal to share sensitive military information.

The Army Times reported on Friday that two people familiar with the investigation by the Pentagon watchdog revealed details to the Associated Press about the matter.

    BABYSITTERS WANTED

The White House is looking for a new chief of staff and several senior advisers to support Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth after a series of missteps that have shaken confidence in his leadership, but it has so far found no suitable takers, according to four current and former administration officials and a Republican congressional aide.

Top Defense Department jobs, including the defense secretary’s chief of staff, are normally considered prestigious and typically attract multiple qualified candidates. But at least three people have already turned down potential roles under Hegseth, according to a former U.S. official, the defense official and a person familiar with the matter.
