What happens if the contract they sign Iggy to puts them over the cap? Will they be allowed to use the MLE only to sign a FA, or can they go over the cap to sign a guy like Maggette in that scenario as well?
And then the Sixers go after Biendrins. It's one great incestuous orgy.
thx. trying to work and surf the internets
I'm fairly certain that as long as they sign the FA before they AI, they can use all the money under the cap. They can go over the cap matching an offer sheet, since AI is their own RFA. If they sign AI first and the contract takes them to, or over the cap then they are limited to the MLE.
So is Philly allowed to go over the cap to sign Iggy and Josh Smith? How would that work?
So they can sign Josh Smith to say an eleven million dollar contract with raises them to 45 million or so. Then they can offer a max contract to AI for 20 million after that?
Bruno or MB would be able to answer it for sure, but I believe so - as long as Atlanta doesn't match the offer sheet.
Exceptions can only be used if you are over cap, with the exception of MLE only if you are under cap by an amount less than MLE. E.g., if cap is 59M and you have 54M and MLE is 6, you can spend 1M over cap, not 5MIL and then get the MLE.
As for Philly, they can't use any type of bird right if they spend up to their cap. As I said, exceptions don't work unless you are over cap. To match an offer, they have to have that amount under cap.
I stand corrected. I thought that a team can go over the cap to re-sign their own FAs. Why does this not work with offer sheets? Or is it they can match offer sheets only if they are already over the cap?
So they could not offer Josh a 16 million dollar contract then offer Iggy a 18 million dollar contract? How do teams get so far over the cap if there are all these rules in place then?
This should be on a GS board...
I think the Warriors would be best served to trade Harrington for Hinirich; play Ellis at the two; resign Azubuike; offer Iggy and Smith big contracts in the 12 to 15 million range, hoping to land one of the two.
They'd return a team of Hinirich, Ellis, Smith, Wright and Biedrins, with a good bench. That's not bad. It's about as good as they have right now.
Smith and Iggy are both better players than Maggette.
From a Spurs perspective, I think this would also be best for us.
What about Stephen Jackson
He had a ty playoff run. That dinged his stock a bit. I'm thinking if you want a MAX deal, you should, at a minimum, put a team on your back and take them to the second round.
It takes years of signing your own players over the cap and adding MLE deals, but it can be done.
I agree with him taking a hit, but I doubt that anyone looking at him got scared off of offering him a big contract because of the playoff performance. He can be a key piece and could command a lot of money. Just surprised things have been so quiet around him.
I know, but when you sign your own players and players to MLE deals doesn't that count against your cap but not put you into luxury tax? How do these teams get into luxury tax area if you are not allowed to sign players if you are over the cap?
Where is he gonna get his minutes here? Are we gonna play Magette insted of Ginobili?
Or Magette, Bowen, Duncan, Parker, Ginobili as the first option of small ball?
Ginobili doesn't start.
Bowen won't play at the end of the game.
Probably finish with:
Duncan, Parker, Ginobili, Magette, and Udoka.
Finley played 27 minutes a game last season, Maggette would get those plus some.
I hope the General Managers around the league are as low on JR smith as Stein is
The way this is shaping up, i wouldnt be suprised if the Spurs missed out on Maggette and some team panicked and offered JR more than the MLE..... no way do the Nuggets match an offer for more than the MLE.
i hope Golden State and Phily push hard for JR Smith![]()
they should coz i know Philly needs some 3 pt help
Miller/JR/AI2/?/Dalembert - thats a nice young core
Ellis/JR/Sjax/Harrington/Biedrins - another nice starting 5
It wouldnt suprise me if they did.
