Miami defeats Chicago 94-70
Orlando, Fla.- The much anticipated match-up between Michael Beasley and Derrick Rose proved to live up to its billing Monday, and it was Beasley's Heat that came out victorious, 94-70.
Beasley, who is playing with a slightly fractured sternum, had the upper hand early, leading Miami with nine points in the first half, while playing just over eight minutes. Rose, playing with a sore right knee, managed three points on 1-of-3 shooting in 15 minutes of action in the first half. Demetris Nichols led Chicago with 11 points in the half.
Chicago, led by recently hired head coach Vinny Del Negro, trailed 48-34 at the half.
When the second half began, the action began to pick up between the two top draft picks. Rose displayed spectacular speed on multiple buckets, scoring seven points in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Beasley exhibited his solid shooting touch, lighting up the nets for 14 third-quarter points, extending Chicago's lead to 20, 73-53, at the end of three.
The Heat, who led by as many as 27, shot 42 percent and had only 10 turnovers.
Although his NBA debut was impressive, Beasley didn't dominate every play of the game. Late in the fourth quarter, when he drove baseline and went up to dunk, Chicago forward Cedric Simmons rejected it, drawing quite a reaction from the standing-room-only crowd at the RDV Sportsplex.
Nonetheless, Beasley led all scorers with 28 points on 9-of-21 shooting, while grabbing nine rebounds.
The Bulls struggled from the floor, shooting just 37 percent, and turned the ball over 18 times. Rose finished with 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting, dished out four assists but had five turnovers.

Raptors announce their roster:

Hey ChumpDumper, how is it possible that Rod Benson is on two teams of the same league? He's listed on the Suns and Raptors roster.
That's a good question. I know he went to at least four mini-camps. Maybe he hasn't decided which one to be on yet, or he's with Toronto and Phoenix didn't update.
Interesting that Sean Banks is on the Raptors squad and not the Lakers.
Really, why is that? The Lakers don't own his rights or anything.
I just thought he would be on their squad after doing well in their system.

Miami defeats New Jersey 90-81
By Marc D'Amico | July 8, 2008
Orlando, Fla.- The Miami Heat defeated the New Jersey Nets 90-81 in the opening game of day two at the Orlando Pro Summer League.
The Heat led almost the entire first half, but the bigger story was that they did it without much help from their star rookie, Michael Beasley.
Beasley finished the first half with more fouls and turnovers (he had five of each) than points (four). He came up empty for the half from the field, shooting a woeful 0-for-9. His only positive performances came from the free throw line, where he went 4-for-4, and in the rebounding department, where he notched six boards, five of which were offensive.
With Beasley not performing up to his abilities, second-round draft pick Mario Chalmers stepped up his game. Chalmers finished the half with 13 points, eight of which came from the free throw line. He also dished out two assists. His performance, coupled with Kasib Powell’s 11 points, kept the Nets at bay.
The top performer in the half on offense for the Nets was Anthony Tolliver, who scored seven points. But the most impressive play had to be Sean Williams, who single handedly shut down Beasley for the half while putting up six points and three rebounds.
The Heat managed to go into halftime with a 43-34 lead.
The third quarter brought much of the same for Beasley. He continued his poor shooting, making his first field goal from beyond the arc at the 6:48 mark.
New Jersey’s strong draft class played well in the third and as Beasley’s fouls continued to mount up, the Nets got back in the game. Ryan Anderson showed his NBA range and had a 10 point third quarter while Brook Lopez notched eight points. The Nets managed to cut the lead to five at the half after Beasley committed his seventh foul. As a result of the seventh foul, the Nets received two free throws and possession. Anderson made both free throws, and out of a timeout Will Conroy split a double team and found Marcus Slaughter for a dunk. The Heat managed to hold onto the lead after three, with a 66-61 score.
Anderson’s hot shooting continued into the fourth quarter. He hit a 3-pointer to open the final period and hit another at the 6:16 mark to give the Nets their first lead since early in the first quarter, at 71-69.
Chalmers then began to take over, both driving and dishing. He made a driving contested layup to give the Heat a one point lead and later found Anthony Morrow wide open in the corner for a 3-pointer. That shot seemed to put the Nets away and gave the Heat the lead for good.
The top performer for the Heat was Mario Chalmers, who finished with 19 points, nine assists, three steals and two rebounds. Anthony Morrow also added 19 and Kasib Powell finished with 17 points and five rebounds. Beasley’s miserable day ended with a stat line of nine points, five turnovers, seven fouls, seven rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot.
The Nets lost the game, but they had strong performances from their top two draft picks. Anderson displayed great touch from inside and outside, finishing with 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting along with seven boards. Brook Lopez had 18 points and seven rebounds while making 8-of-10 from the field.
The teams continue play tomorrow evening, when the Nets face Oklahoma City at 5 pm and the Heat face the Pacers at 7 pm.

Oklahoma City defeats Orlando 100-77
By Mac D'Amico | July 8, 2008
Orlando, Fla.- An unexpected cameo by Kevin Durant helped Oklahoma City to their first win in franchise history, in a 100-77 victory over the Orlando Magic. The win may have been in a summer league, but it is a win nonetheless.
Durant performed brilliantly, hitting 7 of 10 shots from the floor and being a leader on the court throughout. But the new Oklahoma City faithful should know that they have more than the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year. Their first round draft pick, Russell Westbrook, has played more consistent than anyone in the league thus far, showing uncanny quickness both on the offensive and defensive ends. Jeff Green has also shown growth in his game, averaging 25.5 points per game.
The first quarter was dominated by two of the young stars, as Durant and Westbrook combined for 19 points, four more than the entire Magic team. Durant dropped 10 points and grabbed two rebounds, while Westbrook scored nine with two assists and a steal.
On the Orlando side, James Augustine had a better first quarter than his entire game on Monday. He scored six points on 3-of-3 shooting from the field.
Oklahoma City led by 14 at the end of the first, 29-15.
In the second, Courtney Lee did his best to keep the Magic in the game by scoring all six of his first half points. With the potent Oklahoma City lineup, it just wasn’t enough. Jeff Green scored seven of his 13 first half points in the second quarter, and Westbrook added another six, giving him 15 for the half. Durant cooled off a bit, going into the half with 13 points. Still, the team managed to go on a 14-4 run over the final 4:29 of the half.
Oklahoma City shot 62.1 percent from the field in the first half. Orlando also shot the ball well at a 45.2 percent clip, but only managed to score 33 points.
Durant and his teammates went into the break with a 51-33 lead.
The 18-point halftime lead quickly ballooned to 26 midway through the third quarter, as Jeff Green scored six quick points and Durant added another four to his total. Oklahoma City continued to click on all cylinders and finished the period with a 31-point advantage, at 81-50.
As Oklahoma City emptied its bench early in the fourth quarter, Orlando’s Courtney Lee came to life, splitting double teams for layups and hitting shots from outside. His 18 fourth quarter points weren’t enough, and the Magic never got closer than 23.
The trio of stars for Oklahoma City combined for 69 points. Jeff Green led the three with 28 points, 15 of those coming in the second half. Durant finished with 22 and Westbrook chipped in 19. They were the only three Oklahoma City players to finish in double digits.
Orlando also had three players score in double figures, led by Lee’s 27. James Augustine and Marcin Gortat added 10 a piece. Kevin Kruger played a solid game at the point guard position, dishing out eight assists while committing only one turnover. The Magic shot 46 percent from the field for the game, but only scored 77 points.
Oklahoma City was the first team to break 100 in this year’s summer league. They scored 100 points on 58.5 percent shooting from the field.

Chicago defeats Indiana 89-84
By Dan Dugger | July 8, 2008
Orlando, Fla. – Derrick Rose's second NBA appearance was quite similar to his first. The rookie guard struggled again from the floor, shooting just 2-of-9, and scoring nine points but the Bulls topped the Indiana Pacers 89-84.
Once again it was forward Demetrius Nichols who delivered early for Chicago. After scoring 11 points in the first half of Monday's game, Nichols did the same against Indiana, finishing with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting in the first 20 minutes of play.
From the onset, the game was extremely sloppy as the teams combined for 12 first-quarter turnovers. Chicago guard Keith Langford capped off the first frame with a 19-foot fade-away jumper with just under a second left, putting the Bulls ahead, 19-13.
The Pacers gained ground in the second quarter, outscoring the Bulls 22-16, behind a combined 11 points from Earl Calloway and Andre Emmett.
Rose started the game 0-for-4 and the Bulls committed 12 first-half turnovers. The squads combined for 21 first-half turnovers and headed to the break tied at 35.
Roughly two minutes into the third quarter, Rose's first bucket of the night came dropped when he drove on a fast break, hung in the air and found the bottom of the net from 10 feet away.
Nonetheless, the Pacers remained persistent and forward Josh Davis poured in nine points in the third, propelling the Pacers to a 59-51 lead at the end of three quarters.
The Bulls started the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run tying the game at 59 with 7:58 remaining, forcing Indiana to call a time out.
Thereafter, consecutive threes by Keith Langford and Demetrius Nichols put the Chicago ahead by six, 66-60. The Bulls, without Rose for nearly all of the fourth, put on a shooting display, making a stellar 65 percent of their fourth-quarter shots, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Aaron Gray made his presence felt inside, recording 13 of his 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the final frame.
Keith Langford led the Bulls with 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting while Thomas chipped in with 17 points and seven rebounds.
Earl Calloway scored a game-high 20 points for Indiana who was outscored 38-25 in the final quarter.

Return to Original Buzz Up PrintORLANDO, Fla. (AP)—Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose sat out the team’s summer league game Wednesday with tendinitis in his right knee.
Rose, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, tweaked the knee in an exhibition game Tuesday.
He has struggled a little in summer league, where the Bulls are one of six teams playing five matchups in five days in Orlando. The games are closed to the public but broadcast online.

New Jersey defeats Oklahoma City 95-81
By Melanie Curtsinger | July 9, 2008
It took more than 30 minutes of play, but the New Jersey Nets finally pulled away from Oklahoma City in the final quarter to take a 95-81 victory in the second game of Day Three at the 2008 Orlando Pro Summer League at the RDV Sportsplex in Orlando, Fla.
With Vince Carter looking on and even joining the team in the huddle, Brook Lopez and Chris Douglas-Roberts led the Nets to their second victory in three games this week, netting 22 and 20 points apiece, respectively, to pace five players for New Jersey in double figures.
The Nets held only a four-point cushion, 74-70, heading into the fourth quarter, but New Jersey’s suffocating defense held Oklahoma City to only 11 points and 25.0 percent shooting from the field in the final 10 minutes of action. After pushing the lead to double digits early in the fourth,
Oklahoma City pulled with seven, 80-73, on a Jeff Green jumper, but New Jersey answered the spurt with an 11-4 run of their own to put the game out of reach for OKC the rest of the way.
Despite the Nets’ balanced scoring attack of three players in double figures and 57.6 percent shooting from the field, New Jersey went into the locker room up only three, 54-51.
Oklahoma City stayed in the contest with a hot hand of their own, as they hit 51.5 percent of their own shots in the game’s first 20 minutes of action. Green paced OKC with 17 points in the first half, including 8-for-10 from the charity stripe, and finished with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the visitors.
