    Salary Cap question time.

Barry was traded to and then cut by the Sonics (becoming an FA). He re-signed with us for the pro-rated Vet Min (Therefore his bird rights therefore went away.), and then has opted-out. As he has been signed for less than 2 years, he qualifies as a non-bird FA. From Larry Coon's salary cap faq, question # 19, http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#19

Does this mean, since Barry was signed for the pro-rated min, can we resign him using this exception for the Vet Min + 20%, without eating any of our other exceptions? Consider, the vet min for a player with Barry's years in 08/09 is $1,262,275. 120% of that is $1,514,730. The LLE is $1.91 Million.

Does anyone suspect that Barry still wants to be in SA, but in the discussions last year (when he left the Sonics), it was pointed out to him that he could get a nice 20% salary bump for this year by opting out, allowing us to use our non-bird exception? Is he playing the same "wink wink, nudge nudge" game that was played last season?
its possible, but i dont see why he wouldnt be angling for the spurs' BAE. its what his market price seems to be, we have it available, its not too much more than the 20% raise (only 500k), and depending on what KT signs for (if its less than 6 mil) we should be able to spend it and the MLE and still come in below the tax line.

Bruno said that the pro-rated contract is considered a full contract, and thus we do have the non-bird rights. I'm not sure if Barry is interested in returning. I think he will try to determine his market value first and then decide after that point. I believe he would most likely be looking for LLE.

Do we have it available? If the reports of us offering it to Delfino are correct, we apparently have other plans for it (although I doubt Delfino accepts). Consider the roster (guaranteed contracts) assuming Maggette signs and Thomas re-signs...

Bigs - Duncan, KT, Oberto, Mahinmi, Bonner
Wings - Bowen, Manu, Udoka, Maggette
    PG's - Parker, Hill, Vaughn

We are short 2 wings and one Big - 3 holes to fill. We have rights to a bunch of players (in particular Javtokas, Gist, Hairston, Sanikidze). We have the LLE, vet min signings, and Non-bird rights to Barry. If we want to bring in Javtokas, I'm confident it will cost at least the LLE. We might want to sign another wing vet (eg. Delfino), and use Gist as big #6... There are lots of possibilities for that LLE (Javtokas, Delfino, other wings and bigs), particularly if Gist, Hairston, or both don't make the roster...

Barry would be perfect in the Rockets system. When T-Mac or Alston goes down, then Barry will be called on to run the offense. If Alston runs the offense there will be plenty of jumpers for Barry to shoot. If Barry Runs the offense, he and T-Mac will be a double threat for scoring. I look for Barry to be the sixth man on a Rockets squad and his playing for the Rockets could get him back to his career highs in scoring and assists.

you can probably forget about delfino for the BAE, thats not happening. even though the raptor dont have a ton of interest in keeping him, they still gave him the QO (which is 2.7 mil), and if 1.9 mil is all it costs to retain him, they will jump at that. plus i think he could get slightly better offers from several other teams (maybe close to half the MLE). not to mention he could make at least twice the BAE playing in europe if he wanted too (which i believe he hinted at last year if things didnt work out with the raptors). i think delfino was approached as a "plan B" if maggette heads to the warriors or sixers.

add javtokas to the list of players i dont think would accept the BAE as well. hes making more than that right now, so why would he take a paycut to play the 4th/5th big for the spurs?

with our tax situation next season, i cant see them running a roster larger than 14 (at least not until late in the season where we might play revolving d-leaguers again). so (assuming maggette ends up a spur), that leave two spots. i personally would like those two spots to be filled by hairston and barry. we ran with 5 bigs last season (i dont count mahinmi), i dont see why we wouldnt again. now if mahinmi still looks a bit lost in the summer leagues or bonner is moved for nothing, i could see them going after a big with the vet min (horry, maybe skinner or someone else), but i dont think they look there if everything else is looking good.

he is an exellent fit for Suns. He would get more minutes also. He should go for his sake.
Wherever he can be utilized as a pg or pointforward type so he can use his ball distribution and dribbling skills ie Gm 4 vs the Flamers and not just hork treys.
LordPop is too dense/cementheaded/hungover to use him any other way.

I like Finley alot better than Barry. Every Spur fan should to. Personally I would get rid of Horry,Barry and Finley. But if the Spurs feel they need to keep one of them it should be Finley. He can heat it up with the 3's and is a great free throw shooter. I think he does force shots though. I have a feeling the Spurs encourage him to shoot. They should have him be a bit more picky. Just my opinion.

I think Barry would be a good addition to the Suns and an even better addition by subtraction by removing him from a main rival and a team that he tends to kill.

His playmaking ability would be appreciated.

Well, at least your long-term commitment to the "dirty" Spurs is evident.

Yes indeed. I am disgusted at the thought of the NBA being dirty, refs and all. Thats for another thread and another day.

I'm wondering why the Suns want Barry. I'm thinking Kerr should have stayed in the booth. Barry is not going to help that team to a championship. Get a 20 something year old with potential instead of a guy who will be 38 nex year.

ing GOT SUNS...they want to be Spurs. Every trade they make got Spurs in mind. They hire Spurs as a GM, they want to lure Mike, now they want Barry.... ING SUNS. Barry is a solid player and he still got lots left in his tank (look at Game 4 vs Lakers), we should keep Barry and let Thomas go....we need big man better than Thomas, coz he's just tin on court other than guarding Shaq. his jumpshot was sucks coz hes getting old
