What we need is another threat off the bench. I think Pop wants to put a second team out there that is just as proficient as the starters. You see what happened this year, when one of the big three wasnt on the court. You do need a reliable fourth player that can be a go-to guy when Manu, Parker, and Tim are not on the court.

As this free agency season proves, the Spurs should prepare for everything, and be ready for anything. One day, everyone was sure Maggette would sign for the MLE. The next day he signed for almost double that. One day, everyone seemed sure Brand would team up with his buddy Baron, and the next day he's a 76er. There's just no way to know. I don't know if Mason was option #1 this year, or if he was #2 behind Maggette, or if he was #5 and got signed because the Spurs were afraid to risk offers to restricted FAs...

I have to agree with some others in this forum that say many big name players probably won't choose San Antonio-- it's not a huge market, and not a huge city, and there has been a certain history established... so maybe while other teams are trying to make big splashes with one superstar, the Spurs go for two very good players instead. something like Tyson Chandler plus a swing player who emerges in the next two years (Chris Douglas-Roberts? Batum?) the way Danny Granger or Kevin Martin did last year.

I dont think they are that similar.

Artest is a perimeter stopper and scores from the block

Josh Smith is a high flying shot blockers who gets out on the break and finishes plays.

And for the Summer of 2010, do you think a 33/34 year old Manu will be able to be that go to guy for a Championship team. As great as he is, look what happened to Finley and other atheltic 2 guards at that age, they drop of considerably.

I think theres definately room for a Joe Johnson to come in and start and be one of the main guys. I think Chris Bosh could come and be the man... Tim will be 34. Guys like Stephen Jackson could be there.

Tony maybe the only one who is capable of putting up 20 points a game over a season on this team when 2010/2011 season rolls around... there will be plenty of points up for grabs so to speak on this team by that stage.

I think the Spurs have a better shot than most of landing a 2nd or 3rd tier star.. which is what they will need at that stage
