I think this article would have merit if the Spurs had won last year, but they did not even make it to the NBA Finals and are not viewed as the favorite this season either. It is hard to claim jealousy when you are not the one at the top.
    ok?

I think other teams and other players are secretly happy that the injury bug has hit us and we are losing. Just because we didn't win last year, doesn't matter. It still leaves no one feeling sorry for us.

    so what ?

like if someone was sad here for LA when they lost Bynum last year. or for Houston when they lost Yao.

You feel sorry for a player when he is injured if you're not an asshole.

but to feel sorry for the team where he plays if you're another team's fan is another thing. especially if this team is a great one having a good chance to win it all.

I do think basically giving away Scola to a division rival and not seeing how that could detrimentally affect them had a tinge of arrogance. I think the overdosage of international drafting has a faint hint of arrogance, although I do understand that Holt's tight wallet makes for innovative ways to save money.
I would think this is the major point. after ring #3 Holt was somehow satisfied I guess and the policy was like: let's try to keep winning but only if we stay under the tax etc. in other words, a 4th or 5th ring wasn't worth some additional bucks if necessary.
people always look at the 2007 le as a result of the still well working team. but it cover a lot of the history of the problems and maybe explains the reason for the mentioned "arrogance". IMO the 2006 team was much better then the 2007 team, but then they didn't have a bit of the luck they had in 2007, when everything fell in place for the Spurs perfectly. it was a window of luck, the Mavs eliminated themself, the Suns were our perfect match up and helped us big time, the Jazz were just not there yet, nor were the Cavs, who (like the Warriors) removed the for us much tougher match up. and we didn't have a single injury for the whole POs. not even a bleeding nose.
in 2006 they made a truly insane "cost saving" move, when they decided to sign Elson plus Butler as the future center cast to go with Oberto.
the problem was, they got away with this and won 2007. this was IMO the point when they said like: hey, why look for (and pay for) quality bigs, when we can also win with a bunch of 3rd stringers alongside the big 3.

^I totally agree. I said at the time that the worst thing for the Spurs long term was the 2007 Championship because it lulled them into thinking they could keep winning that way. The players for the most part and Pop are pretty humble, but the FO and ownership isn't so much. Sorry to burst the bubble. Holt is happy just to be compe ive and make money.
