You would think less money would equal a less waist line. Like I said, the city should make a deal with Nutrasystem and stop giving them food stamps.
why would anyone the think that? The cheaper foods are usually the bad ones

This is absolutely true. I used to work at two different HEBs ... the one at Fred@ West Ave. and the one at 10 and De Zavala.

The one on Fred Rd., you could have a whole basket of food and the cost would be say $60 because it was full of the cheap stuff ... ground beef, chicken leg quarters, ramen noodles, beans, rice, tortillas, manteca, etc. Some of it is cultural and some of it is that fact that these things are waaaay cheaper.

A basket filled to the same capacity on De Zavala would cost nearly twice as much. Instead of ground beef, steak. Instead of leg quarters, boneless skinless chicken breasts. Instead of ramen noodles, whole wheat pasta ... you get the idea.

Which one is healthier? But which one costs twice as much? A brick of manteca costs 1/4 of that bottle of organic expellor-pressed canola oil. Things laden with high fructose corn syrup are much cheaper than a low-cal sugar subs ute.

Now, before the fatty haters bring more wrath, understand that I am not making excuses for overweight people. But the assumption that being poor means eating soup or that twinkies bought on food stamps is making San Antonio fat is pretty off.

seriously though, this needs to stop. The problem is that the numbers are scewed. We get a LARGE majority of immigrants from the Laredo border that get citizenship and stay in SA because its so close to home.

Thats no excuse though, we have WAY to many jalisco's in this city. you cant go a block without seeing one. Its ing disgusting when you think about it. I get there are medical issues with some people but dont tell me thats the reason. San Antonio isnt the only city in America that has that disease. People need to learn restraint about feeding their kids chorizo taco's and mountain dew every ing day.

If people here in town took the same conviction about strip clubs and smoking bans and applied them to fat farms (Jalisco's and other mexican resturants) then this city would be in a much better state.

I run at least three times a day the streets 2.5 miles and today i did a 5k on the treadmill in 37 min. The big problem in this town is it's a to bike/run cause you're in constant fear of being hit by the crappy drivers here

That is true. There are very few good places to run. Especially downtown. If I'm there, I usually end up doing laps around the Alamodome.

Hey, I dropped 40lbs since I've been back so it's not the environment or food. And I love Tex-Mex food. It's all about your mindset. Most of my friends that are over weight are settled down and have a family.

All my single friends are fit as . They either work their asses off or they workout or both.

Heh, Americans talking smack about whose city has more fatties... this is like another version of the "Who're the biggest losers: Suns or Mavs?" thread.

Wasn't Austin like #1 on one of these lists not long ago? May have just been a different survey.

And yes, there ARE fat people in Austin. There are fat people everywhere. But after being here for a couple years now, you DEFINITELY see less obesity in general.
Replace the fat people walking around with joggers and bikers, and the Mexican food joint on every block with some hippie shop, and I guess that's what happens.

Exactly how big of a percentage would you say are obese in San Antonio? I've read a few figures but they seem a little unrealistic to me. I just find it hard to believe that a whole city can have over 50% of its citizens qualify as obese.

EDIT: My bad, it was over 50% are overweight not obese. The obese percentage is supposed to be around 30%. Still incredible though
