    Protectionism gets retaliated against, and a trade war can do needless damage to all the parties. It can raise the price of imports at the worst possible time.
    Correct.

    It also gives us some moral authority when it comes to negotiating treaties.

    Since we do have the WTO and some treat obligations, it pays for us to keep the moral high ground as far as this goes.

    Not that I want us to be suckers.

    If some country holds out our products, while importing to us freely, 'em. Go through the WTO and point out their own obligations. If that fails they are not negotiating in good faith, and everybody knows it.
