He's been more impressive this season than Mahinmi...
Although he definetly is not the answer, he may be an improvement. He needs more minutes to show he can consistently be a decent ten minute motor guy.
Well it doesn't help that the guy shrunk two inches during his trip from Austin to SA.
He was called for some fouls but he was getting up there and contesting shots. He was always looking around, staying with his man, and his rotations were pretty good.
The dunks and getting to the ft line were impressive too.
If he can show some more of that in the next few games I don't see why he doesn't get a 2nd day contract. The rest of the year? Too early to tell.
wow..where the do some of you guys expect to find an answer for LAs bigs? we aren't going to..we have to roll with what we got..
there's nothing wrong with hoping Pops pans out as an explosive energy guy off the bench..while he doesn't play D, his energy can help a lot to tire out other big men offensively..
Nuggets bigs aren't a concern, we own Denver..
-Just when I thought we were rocking on D. At least I saw Pop and liked his energy, but the dude needs to spend more time in the gym practicing D or he's out of here. Pop could care less if Pops can dunk. I liked it though, but I'll take D over dunks anyday.
we're missing our best player, who happens to be our best defensive player, against the 3rd ranked offense in the NBA(that has arguably the best player in the NBA following a game where he struggled)..
this doesn't stop our defensive improvements..we'll see vs. Portland..
he didn't just dunk. he grabbed 6 boards, and fought for many more. he hustled. in his first game with the team i thought he did a great job.
Agreed its important to look at what he can do over the long run. Not just this year but he has the potential to be a solid player that could add to the depth chart. He could be a Malik Rose type accept taller plus better hops along with the fact he understands the system perfectly since he played in it in college.
Could he be what Nazr has been and more?
I've been told by fans of the d-league that Pops reminds them more of Elson than
Nazhr.
So could he be more that what elson has been?
The Spurs don't have a lot of great options at the 4 outside of Duncan, so I'd like to see what this guy can do a few minutes a night. I liked seeing some a big who could actually jump on this team.
Kill_Bill_Indazone made a good comparison... Carl Landry. Theyre similar, although Pops is bigger. Landry is more developed and has a better feel for the game.
But he's markedly smaller than both. Like Bonner, he's just too small to get rebounds against a true center.
Pops may be a keeper. But he doesn't look like the big the Spurs were looking for to defend and rebound against the Lakers.
sign another 10-day!
Some free advice just for you, weebo...see an eye doctor first thing Monday morning. And while you're at it lay off the booze. Pops and Hill give the Spurs two dunkers, says coach Pop. We now have tattoos, headbands, and slam dunkers....finally we are a real NBA team...again according to coach Pop.
Pops is not a center. He can play the 3 or 4. There are presently no centers worth a damn available. All the good ones make way too much $$$ for the Spurs to get one. And Ian seems to be injury prone so I don't know if he'll ever play for the Spurs. We'll be just fine in the playoffs.
Tonight's game was just one of them fluke games that every team has a couple times a season!
We may not be able to get a good big man, but unlike other teams, we can develop a good big man....
How about this guy Cheikh Samb? He's 7'1" and leads the D League in blocks with 3.89/game?
At least has the physical credentials to play the position and he seems to be available.
Hopefully Mahinmi is that big... but Pops seems to have a unique and highly valuable skillset. He may not be a long big but he sure as is a high energy havoc inducing big. Looks like a keeper to me.
Also I wouldn't say he's too short to get rebounds against a true center. I'd agree that you need height to guard elite centers, but not board with them. Some of the best rebounders in the history of the league have been undersized high energy bigs.
