Rockets, Spurs meet in Southwest shootout
(Sports Network) - The two top teams in the Southwest Division square off Saturday when the Houston Rockets host the San Antonio Spurs at the Toyota Center.
The Rockets climbed to within 1 1/2 games of the Spurs on Friday in Charlotte when Ron Artest swatted Vladimir Radmanovic's potential game-tying three-point attempt and followed with an uncontested coast-to- coast layup in the closing seconds to seal Houston's 91-86 victory over the Bobcats.
Artest finished with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Rockets, who have won four of five overall and seven straight over Charlotte. Yao Ming added 23 points and eight boards in the win, while Luis Scola netted 15 and Aaron Brooks 10.
The Spurs, who lead the Rockets by three games in the loss column, failed to complete a four-game homestand in perfect fashion on Thursday when Kobe Bryant's three-point dagger with 1:46 to play helped the Los Angeles Lakers fend off San Antonio, 102-95, and clinch the Pacific Division le.
Michael Finley and Tony Parker each scored 25 points for the Spurs. Parker also dished out nine assists, while Tim Duncan notched a double- double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
The two teams have split a pair of meetings this season with each club winning on its home floor.
The Rockets, who are a gaudy 27-7 at home, blistered San Antonio, 103-84, on November 29 in Houston. The Spurs are a solid 20-12 on the road, however.
