Halfway through the 89-90 season we ended up trading him to the Knicks for Rod Strickland.

The Spurs drafted terribly for most of the '90s.
Aside from Manu and TP, has anything changed since the 90's?????? TD doesn't count either, that wasn't a "draft decision".

Alot of these names were scrubs to begin with. So the mere fact that they didn't perform as Spurs came as no surprise.

For instance -- Uwe Blab. No expectations, no performance, nothing to be disappointed about. Same goes for Charles Smith, Negele Knight, and Jack Haley.

Now ... as for Spurs from whom we got little return for our dollar, there is Carl Herrera (never was the same after his injury), Sidney Green, Damon Stoudamire, Nick van Exel, and Ron Mercer.
You must be thinking of Charles "Spider" Smith the SG/SF.

I was talking about the Charles Smith that played for the Knicks from 1992-96that's famous for missing like 4 straight put-backs at the rim vs the Bulls in the Playoffs at the end of the game. He was the Knicks (a playoff team) starting SF for a few years (because Oakley played PF), then was traded to the Spurs for J.R Reid and Brad Lohaus and played for them from 96 to 97.

The guy averaged 21pts and 7 reb for the Clippers. Then 12pts and 5 reb at SF for the Knicks back when they had Starks, Oakley, Ewing, Anthony Mason, Derek Harper, and Doc Rivers and made it to the Finals vs Houston.

    Hardly a scrub...

He became a scrub in San Antonio though (averaged 4pts and 3 rebs on 40% shooting as a PF his last year) and never played again after the Spurs said goodbye to him after the injury plagued 96-97 season...
Conveniently right after we drafted Tim Duncan. I'd say it was a nice "upgrade" at PF!

No, I was indeed referring to Charles Smith, acquired from the Knicks with Monty Williams for Brad Lohaus and J.R. Reid. I am aware that he was at one time a very good player. But by the time he got traded to the Spurs, his knees were shot and he was washed up. I didn't expect much from him
