Two things come to mind. Both tied for 1st place:
On my 14th birthday, my dad surprised me with a summer trip to Wrigley Field for a Cubs/Pirates series. I've been a Cubs fan as long as I can remember (because of him). This was back in '92 when they still had Greg Maddux (pre-Atlanta), Ryne Sandberg, Mark Grace, Andre Dawson and Sammy Sosa(pre 'roids). To make it even better, the Cubbies swept the series. Quite a feat for them at that time.
A few years ago my grandfather, with whom I'd had very little contact until my mid 20's, drove 4 hours to my place to take me and the wife to dinner. He gave me a picture frame with several pictures of my biological father. (I was adopted as a baby) I was completely speechless.
Nice presents. I wanted a sofa bed this year but I don't think it's gonna happen.
My birthday falls over spring break every year & when I was growing up, it always seemed to be the week my mom would go on vacation. On my sixteenth birthday she went to Thailand, Indonesia and some other places. She felt bad for missing my B-Day so she brought me back an antique korean medicine chest. It is what the medicine men (physicans) used in the 1700s & 1800s to keep all of their potions and herbs. I have used it as a jewelry chest ever since then. I loved the idea of having something with such an interesting history.
This is a photo of one that is closed
Then when you open it up it is filled with drawers like this photo.. I love it.
