I know currently, you can shoot from behind the backboard as long as it doesn't hit the back of the board. The top of the backboard is also inbounds, but the shot clock is not.

I mean the Larry Bird shot, which we're discussing, happened in a preseason game in the 80's. The rules were probably the same but I honestly have no idea.

They changed the rule. Before the change... the ball could not pass over the plane of the backboard.

Ball can pass the plane of the basket since the sidelines are still inbounds.

Ball cannot touch the back of the backboard or any supporting stanchions/shot clock.
