Style has always been of moderate importance, which is why Steve Nash gets slobbered over more than Mark Price or John Stockton ever did.
That's just because he's a honkey.

How many people became basketball fans because of John Stockton or Tracy McGrady? How many people became basketball fans because of Pete Maravich or Steve Nash?
True.
I was just playin' devil's advadada.
People are failing to take into consideration the context of their respected careers. Pistol Pete was a trend setter.
As well as somebody who was enormously influential with both fans, his peers and the players that have followed him.
Maravich was an amazing college player, but just a really good NBA player. As many faults as TMac has, his game is just better. Some stats weren't kept early in Pistol's career, but for the years they kept them, his asst/TO ratio was barely above 1, and his assists were barely above Tony Parker level.
In the end, I'll always remember Pistol Pete, while I've already forgotten Tmac. On those terms, Maravich is the clear winner -- regardless of stats.
Assuming T-Mac was a better player in his prime, which career would you rather have? Which player do you think got the most out of his talents?
Maravich is an icon who is credited as being a showman that influenced a generation of fans and future players. He was stuck on crummy teams for most of his career, but at his peak some tried to argue he was the best player in the League and not just a guy who could only play 1 on 5. T-Mac is a guy who's had his heart and toughness questioned. Nobody has ever said Maravich is a gutless underachiever, just somebody who couldn't harness his talents very well within the NBA game.
I like Pistol a lot, but give me McGrady. IMO he makes scoring look easier than anyone ever and could do it all.
If you wer forced to start a team around one, which would it be? I would go with McGrady.
Too bad T-Mac is one of the biggest wastes of talent ever.
Imo, neither.
Maravich is the more transcendent figure. Whether that's because he was white or it was a style thing- probably because he was white with style- doesn't really matter. To be brutal about it, had Maravich not existed he would have needed to be invented, which can't be said about McGrady.
Career-wise it's a wash IMO. In McGrady's defense re: the blown playoff leads, his was the inferior team in all three of those series with the arguable exception of Houston-Utah in '07.
sons I gotta go with whitey on this one. it doesn't take much to beat lazy ass, cross eyed McGrady
Tracy McGrady, I think had the better career. He got those chumps in Orlando to the playoffs.
Hahahahahaha, are you out of your freakin' mind starting this thread????
maravich went to a bad team and made it better. tmac went to a good team and made it worse.
Maravich plays like the old guy at the Y who s on everyone. Tracy plays like the black guy that plays college ball somewhere and shows up at the Y to get a couple games in. Either way you're getting on...it's just a complete contrast in styles.
