    Great news !!
That being said, 40 millions is a bit too much IMHO
Yeah, it's probably a bit more than what his production in the future will be worth, but Manu's always been the underpaid member of the Big 3. The Spurs have a habit of using new contracts to pay for past contributions...

after having been underpaid all of his career, he will end up overpaid like many other aging players.

35 M for Tim + Manu in 2011-12 could hurt the team. if tony goes back to his old self next year and obtains a 15M/year contract, that could be 50 M/year for the big three, with two "old" players. a lot of money.

anyway, 3 more years of manu IS a good news, that's for sure.
The fact that the FO is fine with locking in a pretty large amount of money in 2011-12 could mean one of 2 things:
    1. Tim may be willing to renegotiate his contract
    2. George Hill may be the starting PG post 2010-11

Great resigning Manu. A bit expensive to be honest for a 33 year old entering the final stage of his career.

    Now it's really official:

    http://www.nba.com/spurs/news/spurs_...li_100409.html

“It is quite obvious how important Manu has been to our program,” said Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich. “It is a great feeling to know that one of the best players in the world will continue to be a Spur.”

The Spurs have had a lot of players whose impact is not always present in the boxscore. Just watching Manu, I know how integral he is to the Spurs. Reading that article, and seeing the numbers, serves only to back up what I already knew. SOme of those stats just blow me away.

I'm glad he will continue to be a Spur. Even though objectively speaking its a tad pricey, not having Manu for the remainder of Tim's career would be even more costly.

r u seriously trying to say Manu should be getting closer to Kobe's salary??

Manu's new salary is perfect for him.

He was underpaid all these years.. i don't mind the new contract AT ALL! I saw the highlights on spurs.com... insane for just this year! I read the numbers too... Those numbers are insane and I know they don't even capture what he has brought to this team.

Pessimist: So it looks to be fully guaranteed AND there's apparently a trade kicker that makes his contract even more untradeable should he flop. Jeez.

Optimist: Manu is absolutely necessary to the Spurs remaining in contention through the Duncan era and is a fan favorite that will retire a Spur. Awesome news!

Honestly, I feel a little bit of both right now.

He produces half of it so not close but at least half should be Market value...

If he flops he won't have much trade value anyway. I'm not worried about his lack of effort at any rate.

We got zero hometown discount, which shows you how concerned the front office was about letting him explore free agency.

I love that Manu will likely retire a Spur (or at least that we'll get all of his truly productive years). It's unfortunate that we had to commit to that big of a salary, because the roster will be negatively impacted by it in a couple years. Overpaying a veteran, oft-injured player will make it tougher to field a compe ive roster. Need to hope for good health for Manu, obviously, which is pretty much what we've been hoping for the past several years anyway. The odds get worse the older he gets, though.

Who knows maybe they gave him a little extra as an incentive to rest from the NT over the next couple years?

I sure as hope that was part of the discussion. We'll give you the cash, but you've got to spend your offseasons in a padded room doing absolutely nothing that could hurt yourself.
