Tony is 6 years under Fisher. Manu is 2 years older than Gasol. Tim is + 4 with Kobe. That's a wash in years. The Spurs problem isn't the age of the Big 3 but imporving the supporting cast. One on one: TP and Fisher, Kobe and Manu, Tim and Pau? How about 3 on 3? We are in great shape with our Big 3 vs the 2 time champs. Splitter will also narrow the gap inside. Timmy will not retire without # 5.

a point guard is the engine of the team
he has to learn where the players want the ball
no team has won a le trading for a new starting point guard or getting rid of their starting point guard

somewhere along the way we started accepting too little from our big 3. what other team on Earth has 3 superstars and says "we didnt win a championship bc of our supporting cast?"

wtf is that? Tony, Tim, and Manu have to be the rock night in and night now. they haven't done that consistently for the past few years and THAT is the problem.

it's not about getting a PG in return right now, it's about getting ANY value given the news that Tony will most likely walk.

If Tony does walk, won't we have freed up the money that USED to be going to his contract? I'm not sure if maybe I don't understand NBA economics too well, but if you're no longer paying a player, then you should have room to sign another player, no? We wouldn't exactly be getting nothing, we would inevitably sign a free agent. That's pretty similar to trading for someone.

the best thing spurs can do is if they have no shot at le is to trade tp at tradedeadline
    for 2 studs
then tp as a fa signs back with the spurs!

    Doesn't work that way.

The ability to sign FAs is determined by the room a team has under the salary cap. The NBA has a soft cap, so most teams are over the cap.

So, a simple example to illustrate:

Say the salary cap is 50M and a team has a payroll of 70M. Now that team has 20M player who walks in FA. They're still at the salary cap and can only use exceptions like the MLE and LLE.

With the big numbers on the books for Duncan and Manu for the 2011-12 season, it is unlikely that the Spurs would have much room under the cap next summer even if Tony and RJ both walk.

    Bull .

If the Spurs lose Parker but gain Bosh in a trade, do you honestly believe the Spurs wouldn't be le contenders?
Oh Jeebus please take the dumb outta dis man.

Then your argument is that the Spurs window is closed and that they need to start rebuilding.

If they want any chance at a le they need a PG. Hill and Manu don't fit the bill.

Edit: Just saw Post #9. Disregard.

This is just dumb. The Spurs will probably not want tony back after this year. They realize that this is it, after this year they rebuild and resigning your soon to be 30 year old pg who relies on his speed would not be a smart move.

The parties will mutually part ways at the end of the year. When it is in both parties interest to do so.

The Tim Duncan window is most likely just 2 years now...with that window closing substantially in the 2nd year...

Trading Parker before this year even begins will most likely close that window shut since 1. It's not likely you'll get equal value; 2. The new player has to get acclimated to the system and his new teammates; 3. Needlessly worsen "chemistry" issue since the team will be incorporating at least 2 additional new players (Anderson and hopefully Splitter).

Also, even if Parker is intent on testing free agency, it doesn't mean he won't resign with the Spurs...in addition, the relationship between Parker and the FO is not terrible...i think a sign and trade option would be quite possible if Parker does choose to leave via free agency.

Trading Parker before the new season starts would be on the premature side, I think. Just play out this season and then make the big decisions when you have better idea about what kind of team you have--especially after Splitter/Anderson are incorporated and Hill and Blair have another year under their belt.

We're doomed to dozens of these threads from now until the trade deadline.
Yep. I kind of wish they'd trade Parker so this would stop. JK. Kind of.

i dont understand how he CAN stay here. if he's already said he wants to test FA and entertain the possibility of playing for another team the SPURS would be beyond stupid NOT to trade him now.

we need to get value for him and this FA market is the best time in the history of the NBA.
Did you have the same analyse/reaction last year when Manu was in THE SAME situation?

Everybody should calm down, like many people on ST understood, this is just part of THE NEGOCIATION PROCESS...

We can't have any other elite player for him because Tony is underpaid for an elite PG and if we wanna have a shot, we need him this year!
