Most old guns are just that...old guns. If he bought cheap guns they will not have much value. There are some older quality rifles that have good collector value though...Pre64 Winchester model 70's, Winchester model 91's, Savage Model 99's, Remington 721's etc.
Old shotguns (unless they were really nice European made over/under's) tend to cap out in value because they don't have replaceable chokes like the newer shotguns.
Old pistols it just depends...most don't have a lot of collector value unless they are "Western" style like the Colt single actions, which you pretty much can't touch one for under a grand and some go for 10's of thousands.
original Colt 45 autos have appreciated a bit. Colt Python revolvers have gone up quite a bit too.

I'm more interested in milsurp stuff. Those were dirt-cheap for quite a while, but some have been going up quite a bit, especially US milsurps.
Yeah, the M1 Garand's in good condition have really gone up. A friend of mine collects Mausers. He's got several hundred.
lucky I bought my Garand cheap back in the 1980s when they imported tons of them.
several hundred mausers, jesus! I've got a couple. My favorite is my M41B Swedish mauser sniper rifle. Great caliber too (6.5 x 55). Got a k98 German one too.
pre-64 winchesters were already high even back when I started collecting guns, so alas, I don't have one.
I've got 2 Winchester model 71's in .348 Winchester and a couple of Savage 99's in .250 Savage. One Remington 721 in .300 H&H magnum. Don't have any model 70's.

Where do you buy ammo for that? Internet?
6.5 x 55 is still used quite a bit. Some factory ammo makers still make it, and some modern rifles are still chambered for it. That is 6.5 by 55.
The german mausers were 8mm. Ammo is still made I'm pretty sure.
But I handload all my own anyway.
My swedish mauser is dated 1908, and I don't think I should shoot the modern factory ammo in it. Even though it is the same caliber, modern pressures are probably too high for the really old mausers.
