that's the article! How much can it cost to build a bigger enclosure??
The Houston Zoo is also in the top 10 in the Country. I can understand the "animal prison" view but I know the look on my kids faces when they were young was well worth it.

When my kids were little, they used to ride the elephants at the SA Zoo. I grew up spending time with my Father at the alligator Gardens & the Reptile house at the Zoo, thus my love for slithery snakesssssss.![]()
The Skyrides @ the Zoo.![]()
They still have those? It was shut down the last time my family went![]()
They've been gone for 20+ yrs, just going down memory lane.
I visited the San Diego Zoo this summer. They built a new elephant enclosure, that was simply amazing. You can watch as the trainers feed and bathe the elephants. We spent quite a bit of time there, watching in awe as the elephants were fed and the enjoyment of the water washing over them. It was funny to watch the elephants try and steal more food from the box. Definitely the best zoo that I've ever been to.
Skyride!!! Yay!!! I remember when my friend Monty drove the safari wagon around the zoo higher than a kite!!! Go Monty!!!![]()
It looks like they've had some success breeding Kimodo dragons. I saw the first babies three years ago and then another hatching in 2008.
(sigh), for a fleeting moment, I hoped![]()
The coolest thing about the SA Zoo is that the SA river runs right through it. It's only about a mile upstream from the Riverwalk and all that /piss runs off into the river and goes right through downtown...![]()
I loved that about the San Diego Zoo. Plus, it also had bus tours. Great for taking a break from walking.
It's pretty sad when the population of a city doesn't realize what a gem of a zoo they have...

So SA Zoo was ranked near the bottom of zoos by an animal rights group that doesn't like zoos?
Shocker... I'm amazed.
Edit: also... The plan is to update the elephant exhibit during phase 3 of Africa Live.

I'm pro death row.
Eh.
But I love birds, and SA Zoo has like the #2 rated aviary in the country
And somehow they missed the trainer beating the elephant at the El Paso Zoo, caught on tape! (to be fair, that beating occurred before 2009)
And that same year, SA Zoo is #6 on "Parents Magazine's Top 10 Zoos For Kids". I guess it's just a matter of personal zoo tastes.....

My lucky 16 yr old actually got to ride those, but my other 2 kids missed out
But the train is running![]()
That's the best part, going on a train ride.
The Brackenridge Eagle! WoooWooo!
The zoo used to have the Penguin House., anyone remember that?
I remember the smell.
They used to also have this little sex fiend spider monkey that jerked off constantly. I remember seeing an elementary school class in front of the cage and the kids asking the teacher what he was doing.
Yep. I remember you would flip off the gorilla he would do it back to everyone for about an hour. Those were fun field trips.
, I remember when good old KoKo, would through at people who flipped him off!!!![]()
And petting zoo was fun when I had Pop Rocks.![]()
The goats that they have are rough, I saw one head butt this poor little kid, knocked him down.
