I would take KG by a slight margin, but I don't think Malone is overrated at all, I actually think he has become underrated for a while now..Stockton is really overrated IMO..
I used to think this. But if you focus on playoffs, stockton was far more valuable in the clutch than Malone, IMHO. Almot every big playof moment it's Stockton not malone that has his fingerprints on it. I will say this though, some members of the media do overrate the guy but ask GP what he thinks ... LOL? He said on TNT a while back (paraphrasing) "that I used to bust his ass (stockton) but John got the All-star votes and ALL NBA ones ahead of me!" ...

Stockton was overrated. He cared more about getting assists than winning games. The reason Stockton was always the one with the playoff moment centered around him was because he was a ball hogging assist who's ego prevented him from letting another player try to create his own shot late in games.

Both Malone and Stockton are overrated. They won the Western conference in 1997 and 1998 when every other team was going through a transitional phase. Shaq and Kobe hadn't meshed yet, Houston was still trying to build around a washed up Hakeem, Duncan was still in college in 97 and was a rookie in 98, and all the other teams just weren't good. The way the Stockton Malone Jazz are talked about like they woulda been a dynasty if not for Michael Jordan is revisionist history bull .

One telling thing about Stockton came from something Jerry Sloan said when talking about Deron Williams. Sloan said Deron calls the sets and plays on offense, and then he said Stockton never did that, never. So in his entire NBA career, John Stockton never called plays. It was always Sloan. Every half court set. We're talking probably 75,000 half court sets in his career. So aside from transition, Stockton was basically Jerry Sloan's robot out on the court. To me, that's extremely telling.

They would have won back to back if it werent for Jordan. You can hate all you want on Utah, but they were better than EVERY team at that time except for the Bulls team.

My good god. I can't believe a couple of you actually think Malone didn't have a good post up game. He's without question the greatest non-center post up player of all-time. Just how much Jazz basketball did you guys watch? Until he perfected his midrange jumper, Malone made a living posting up.

And to say that all Malone got off the PnR was easy layups is completely false, and yet again I question if you guys actually watched any Jazz games.

Jesus ing Christ!! I'm blown away at the stupidity of JamStone and picc84.
    Duncan.
    McHale.
    Barkley.

You could even argue Jordan at the end of his career was a better post up player.

Malone's game was mostly around PnR with Stockton, and rolling to the basket. He did have a good turnaround step back jumper, fills the lane fantastically in the fast break, has a great mid-range game, phenomenal passer in the blocks (especially later on in his career and considering his position).

His postup game, however, wasn't great. He was much much better facing the basket. He never made a living in the low blocks like you claimed. I would even go as far as to say a journeyman like Rony Seikaly, or even Dino Radja, had a better post up game (people don't remember these things because the other aspects of their game was basically non-existant).

Yeah and it was a weak ass time period. They would get steam rolled by the current day Celtics, Heat, Lakers and maybe Magic.

    Yes there is.

Bryan Russell and Hornacek trying to guard Lebron and Wade, or Allen and Pierce for that matter.

2 superstars vs roll players. You got me on that one. But superstars does not mean you will win it all. It depends on how the entire team comes together. Utah played very well together.

Hold on just a minute here. I'm the guy sticking up for Malone here and saying he's getting underrated. His post-game wasn't great like a Duncan or Hakeem, but it on Garnett's.

    the glove > stockton

LOL..............maybe Stockton got all the pub because he was a pass first true point guard. He averaged way more assists than the glove. He could also out shoot the glove any day of the week. I remember watching Stockton and just about every time he went up for a shot, it went in. I used to hate that lil bas , but he was a great player. I would take him over the glove any day.

Congratulations to Stockton for being a pass first PG with tons of assists. That might actually be worth something they day a pass first high assist PG wins a le in the modern NBA.
