Kudos to Pop. I think it's a great move. I always thought Vaughn had a high basketball IQ, and he already knows the Spurs system. He will be a good addition to the coaching staff, even if it is a made-up staff position.

Wow what an astute well thought out statement...
its more accurate than any of the other knob polishing replies in tis thread

its no surprise to the revolutionists (anti-Popologists) that he was gonna be kept around some way, somehow.

look for Bonner to remain part of the organisation as long as Pop is in charge. oh thats right, despite being proven WORTHLESS over a period of YEARS, he signed a FOUR YEAR EXTENSION recently. hahahhahahha

“We didn't really have a spot for him — I just made it up,” Popovich said. “That's how badly we wanted him. We didn't want to lose him to someone else.”

“It was evident everyone on the team looked up to him and respected him, even though he wasn't the most talented player,” Popovich said. “He was always on my list as someone we wanted back when he was done playing.”

“He could have done anything, in management or coaching,” Popovich said. “If he had wanted to go into management, we would have created a spot in management.”

Popovich said Vaughn will not fill Borrego's role directly. He'll be a traditional coach on the bench, giving the Spurs one more assistant than they had last season. He will not be involved in any Toros activities.

Bret Brielmaier will fill Borrego's role in the Spurs' film room.

First Ferry and now Vaughn, it's good to see us finally adding rather than losing staff.

Only I'd imagine Vaughn to be yet another yes man, when Pop really needs somebody who will challenge him a little more when he is about to play small ball or subs ute the Sandwich Hunter back in.

Actually, that's my opinion of what really happened to Hank Egan. He "retired", yet relatively quickly popped up as an asst. in GS, then wound up in CLE with Mike Brown's staff.

Having Vaughn around will only help Hill, Temple and even Parker, IMO. His basketball I.Q. and understanding of our defense can only be an asset with so many young players on board.

Does his signing give the Spurs the most assistant coaches in the NBA? Has there been any indication of what his role will be?

Simply saying that Vaughn isn't likely to offer anything new, whereas a more experienced assistant could be in a position to offer alternatives, not so much 'challenge'. Pop doesn't seem to have this in his staff.

He played 4 years for Sloan. Hopefully he can help defending and playing P&R. The Suns killed the Spurs with that last season. If I remember right, the team has send him to train Parker.

Is better so see him on the bench than on the court
Well, ESPN has him on Spurs Roster again
(with the same number as Penney )
