    Thanks for 2007 Fabs.
Sorry your health took a turn.
But not too sorry as you kept rolling in million dollar paychecks for 3 more years.
Guy with 3 kids working 60 hours a week with no insurance gets more of my sympathy.

But again, thanks for the Championship help!

His FG% was always phenomenally efficient. He wasn't the most athletic guy out there but he was smart, and he didn't waste shots.

Heart condition forces Oberto from NBA
    by jmcdonald

...“I made this decision to put my health and my family in front of basketball,” Oberto said in a release distributed by the Trail Blazers. “It was a tough decision to make after playing for so many years, but it was the right one.”

Anyone remember when the heart palpitations began? Anyone? It was the play that caused Tim Duncan to laugh at Joey Crawford, and Crawford to eject Duncan. I'm not sure that it was cause and effect, but several articles indicated that it was.

If any of you post on Manu's page, tell him to pass on a message to Fabs. "Tell him to come back here and be an international scout or something. Once a Spur, always a Spur."

too bad, though he had a great career. easily the best Center Argentina's ever had.

however, just this morning I was thinking... the Blazers are so thin at C, any chance we could tempt them with a blair / bonner package and try to land oden or pryzbilla? I know its far fetched, and risky due to their health problems, but would certainly add some length and interior D to our roster. Im sure GMs are wondering what kind of deals might be available given their need, maybe we could get in on something as a 3rd party, just a thought.

    Thanks for 2007 fabs.

As far as the Blazers- why would they want Blair and/or Bonner when neither one of those guys can defend real C/PF's? The Blazers are not really that "thin" at C. They have Camby and Aldridge, plus Dante Cunningham is playing well. They also think that pryzbilla will be back sooner than later.

I'm bummed that he can't retire when he's simply tired of playing, sucks that his health is stopping his career. Thanks for all you did for SA and the fans, Fab!

Very sad, Fabricio was the epitome of what the Spurs would look for when filling out their roster. Smart, crafty, and a respectable defender, Fabs was the man

He was a great complement to TD during the 2007 playoff run

He did a great job moving without the ball

Bummer, but I don't consider it sad. Not too many guys get to play professional ball for 17 years, but he did. And he's 35 years old, his career wasn't really cut short in my books. If anything it's going to suck not having him around in the league anymore, but I'm sure he feels accomplished as a player.

    WojYahooNBA Adrian Wojnarowski
Just talked to RC Buford, who calls retiring ex-Spur Fabricio Oberto, "One of the greatest compe ors in international basketball history."

    WojYahooNBA Adrian Wojnarowski
Buford: "Fab was really the leader of the golden era of Argentinian basketball...Almost never the best player but always the best teammate."

    WojYahooNBA Adrian Wojnarowski
Oberto won les in NBA, Euro League, Olympics and World Championships. "A very important piece on a lot of winning teams," Buford said.

    WojYahooNBA Adrian Wojnarowski
For those who missed it, Oberto retired as a Trail Blazer today because of a heart condition.

I remember checking the Cordoba news site every now and then...for a couple of years prior to the Spurs signing him. He has always had such a great feel for the game.

Here's to you, Fabricio Raúl Jesús Oberto. Gold Medal, NBA Ring, great player and teammate. You'll be missed Fabri, or Fabby as your Spurs mates called you.

A bummer but a smart move by Fabbo to retire now rather than press his luck. Hopefully he will be around a long time kicking back, enjoying his family and admiring his ring. Ciao Fabbo!
