I haven't even been paying attention to the Draft this year. Who are the top prospects? Can they really help a team?
This year is odd among recent years, because it seems that most of the best prospects are coming out of U.S. colleges. There are a few overseas kids that are getting some mention, and a few high school kids have their names in the mix, but this year, teams seem focused on guys like Andrew Bogut (Univ. of Utah), Marvin Williams (UNC), Chris Paul (Wake Forest). ESPN has a pretty good list of who is available and their relative merits.

How hard is it for the NBA to borrow one of the state lottery ball machines and their auditors and conduct the lottery in public. What are they afraid of?

How is the draft logic even conducted?
For example, on the first pick Atlanta comes out as the winner, do they:
    1. Leave the remaining 249 Atlanta balls in the pot and pick again.
1a. If Atlanta comes out again, they just chuck it...
1b. Any other repeat team is tossed away...
    2. They stop the pot and pull out all the other Atlanta balls.
2a. The chances for the other teams increases as the inverse of the ratio that was removed.

    ?????????????

The other problem is that there wouldn't be much drama if they did it live -- because of the way they do the drawing, they have to pull for the #1 pick first (if you pulled first for #3, the Hawks would have the best chance to win, but they would have been deprived of their chance to win the #1 pick). So, if you did it live, you'd get the #1 pick revealed first, which would take away the drama of revealing the picks from 14 down to 1.

I'm not buying the "drama" argument. People watch the actual Draft live, and the #1 Team picks first...

Hopefully Golden State gets the #1 with Bogut.

Baron Davis is the lucky charm.

That's a different situation, in my opinion, because the league doesn't have to package the draft as being a dramatic event. The draft's drama is progressive; there is usually more drama in the draft the deeper you go into it, since most years, the iden y of the #1 pick is established long before the broadcast begins.

The lottery, by contrast, is all about the unknown of who will get the #1 pick, a fate that has been known to transform the fortunes of franchises and cities. Nobody knows ahead of time who will win, so they build up to it by slowing eliminating teams from the mix. If they did it the way you propose, they might as well limit it to a one-minute broadcast (which the league won't do) or just publish a list after the fact. The lottery is drama for teams that haven't had any drama all year.

And hegamboa, my understanding is that they do the drawing in the way that you posit in #1 -- they put all the balls in the hopper, draw one, leave all of the other balls in until they draw the first ball from a team that didn't come out on the first pull, and do the same again, pulling until they get a team different from the first two teams selected. They only draw for 3 spots, so I can't imagine it takes a real long time, but it strikes me as being too tedious for TV.

Actually I believe the lottery will be shown prior to the game tonight, not at halftime. My bad.

It's safe to safe the conspiracy theories died the day the Knicks didn't end up with LeBron James.
Or the day the Spurs got Tim Duncan (twice) instead of the Celtics.

Even we only have very slim chance,I hope the Wolwes will claim 1/1,2or 3 pick and Bogut/Paul.
But I"ll be content with the 14.pick and we should take Hakim Warrick.

I would like to show Jeannie some of my own personal positive energy. She wouldn't care what pick the Lakers wind up with after that.

Nah. They're just looking over the prison rolls for any high schoolers with positive urine tests.
