As I thought, Gamebryo engine is out, new engine is in.....

Bethesda Confirms Skyrim will Feature New Graphics/Gameplay Engine

    http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/elder-scrolls-v/1140138p1.html

In 2002, Bethesda produced one of the most stunning visual gaming experiences with Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. The Gamebryo engine used to produce those graphics became a staple at Bethesda, crafting Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Fallout 3, and most recently Fallout: New Vegas. It's been a great run for Bethesda and Gamebryo, but the engine is seriously showing its age, and the studio has confirmed an all-new custom-built engine is being used for the just announced fifth installment in the Elder Scrolls franchise, Skyrim.

Announced at the e TV Video Game Awards on Saturday night via a teaser trailer, Skyrim fired up fans of the franchise who immediately began asking questions about the new fantasy RPG, including whether or not Gamebryo would be used once again. Bethesda quickly responded via Twitter, writing: "Seeing lots of speculation about #tesv game engine. It's brand new... and it's spectacular!"

Bethesda community manager Nick Breckon later provided a bit of clarification, stating that "new" meant a brand new, internally created, "gameplay/graphics engine."

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hopefully the new engine allows for a seamless world without load screens. I want to be able to walk into a cave or dungeon, not load into one.

    Whatever happened to Project Offset...
Intel purchased Offset Software then subsiquently cancelled the game mid 2010. The guys that where origionally working on the game have left Intel and formed a new company called Fractiv.

Looks like Project Offset is dead.

Finishing moves, dual-wielding, and perks are all being added in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The bad news for many fans of the franchise is that Bethesda is also bringing back a tweaked version of one of Oblivion's most contentious elements: enemy level-scaling.

The February cover story of Game Informer -- in your mailbox any day now -- features the first major details on Bethesda's upcoming Elder Scrolls RPG. And along with a wealth of new features, Bethesda reveals enemies will once again improve as you level up your character.

"Since people are asking, we wanted to briefly touch on level scaling," Bethesda commented on its forum in a post covering the Game Informer story. "All our games have had some amount of randomness/leveling based on player level. Skyrim's is similar to Fallout 3's, not Oblivion's."

In Oblivion, every character was leveled to match your character's progression -- often with basic enemies decked out in high-class armor and weapons. In Fallout 3, the scaling was much more balanced. Raiders were never equipped with Power Armor.

More on Skyrim from the Game Informer story:
-- The story is set during a civil war 200 years after the events in Oblivion in a snow realm north of Cyrodil, Skyrim. A Cataclysm-esque dragon, Alduin, is set up as the game's main enemy.

-- There are 10 races to choose from, and players can edit their character's bodies as well as faces, and beards are now an option. Further, there are no specific character classes, so you'll be able to pursue a wide variety of skills for whatever character you create.

-- Based on the weapon you're using, players will be able to perform unique attacks as well as a wide variety of finishing moves in combat. Dual wielding will be an option.

-- There are 18 skills to choose from, and as players level-up their characters, they will be able to choose from a variety of Perks akin to the system in Fallout.

-- Based on how you play the game, quests will be generated to suit your particular style. For example, if your character is a heavy magic user, expect to do battle with a lot of mages.

-- Players will once again have a massive world to explore, and there will be five major cities throughout Skyrim and numerous other towns and villages.
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is being developed for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows PCs. The game is set to ship on November 11.

If they go back to more what morrowind was I will definitely be very interested. Although Oblivion was a damn good game, I really didn't like how much they streamlined the series with it.

That screen shot looks pretty amazing though. I'll keep my fingers crossed

FYI, if you happen to see a Game Informer magazine at the store, stop and take a gander beginning on page 46. Good article with lots more screenshots besides the one above.

Anyway... my brother has a subscription and here are some of the highlights after reading it.....

-Both hands can wield something. you can have a shield in either hand or any type of weapon in either hand. Also, you can have 1 spell in one hand and a totally different spell in the other.... or you can have the same spell in both hands and combine them for more damage.

    - in the new engine, called the "Creation Engine", Every object in the world casts a shadow. Tree's, and the branches of the tree's, all move independently and water flows. Snow falls dynamically and covers branches, rocks and stuff differently.

    - There is a soft cap of level 50, but apparently you can continue to level past that, though it takes much longer each level.

    - There are no "classes". You level up strictly by using skills. a skill going from 34 to 35 will net more "experience" vs a skill that goes from 11 to 12.

    - The Radiant AI has been improved (NPC's now have more actions they can perform) and the Radiant system has been extended to the questing system. It will generate a quest based on your character skills, level, where you are at and where you have been. For instance, if you killed an important NPC earlier in the game, that NPC's sister might take over the shop and provide you with the same quest. Also, if you have already been at a location, the system will switch the quest to a location you havnt been to yet.

    - You can engage in more activities in cities (there are 5 cities btw). not just Stand at the forge and make weapons... you can go farming, mining, woodcutting and cooking.

    - The interface is completely revampped. Dont exactly know what it looks like but they explained it as "if Apple made a fantasy game, what would the interface look like?"

    - Dragons.... lots of them.

Isn't that the 4 player one? If you can play it single player it looks sweet.

Also CH, add Homefront to that list, it looks badass.

This one better have unique companions like Fallout 3/New Vegas. Without mods, the companions in Oblivion left a lot to be desired.

I think it allows for any number of players up to four, using AI to fill in for whichever characters aren't being used. May have even heard the "jump in, jump out" phrase thrown around in interviews with the Insomniac folks, but I can't remember for sure.

I'm actually somewhat skeptical about the format, especially after Ratchet: Deadlocked showed the pitfalls of tinkering too much with a successful gameplay model, but I'm invested enough in the franchise and its world that at this point any (non-PSP) R&C game is an automatic buy for me.

Damn, Skyrim looks slick. I gave my brother my 360, but maybe I'll get another for this and for Portal 2.
