It is pretty interesting. Hu squared up, looked where Obama's eyes would be if he wasn't bowing, and did a conventional handshake greeting...so it apparently wasn't a "deferring to protocol" thing...

They are both respecting each other. Obama knows that it's respect to bow a little in their country and the other guy knows a nice firm eye contact shake means respect in the United States.
