From everything else I've heard, it sounds like the military will be paid retroactively once everything is back up and running.
The military is one of the critical functions. The pays will be funded automatically. Civilian contract... up to the employers I guess.

That would be a disaster. I seem to recall this happening before in the past, and the military still got paid on time.
From Wiki: Government shutdown:
There was a shutdown in 1995 and the military still got paid.In U.S. politics, a government shutdown is said to occur when the government no longer provides "non-essential" services. Typically, services that continue despite a shutdown include police, fire fighting, armed forces, utilities, air traffic management and corrections.
Well - I'm somewhat worried about considerations for my aid package this summer and next year but I was on the ball and already have approval for next year. My understanding is that if approval has been given then you will receive your package.
I remember. I joined in '96 and asked my first supervisor about that situation. She told me that her credit union (Lackland Federal Credit Union; now it's the AFFCU) saw to it that its members got paid on time when others didn't, implying that she wouldn't have received a paycheck had it not been for her financial ins ution.
I'm worried about my daughter's college. There is talk of a strike where she goes. I wonder if I can sue to get my money back if they do?
"For weeks now service members and their families have been concerned about the effect a full-blown government shut down would have on their monthly pay. It appears that Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) may be able to offer some relief in the form of new legislation. Known as the ‘Ensuring Pay for Our Military Act’ Gohmert’s bill would effectively guarantee military pay will continue, in the in the event of a government shut down on April 8.
The following is an excerpt from the original press release:
This legislation ensures that members of the United States Military get their paycheck on time in the event that Congress can not pass a budget.
This bill will appropriate necessary funds to ensure that members of the miliLuck_The_Fakers_tary, including reserve components, continue to receive pay and allowances for their service when a funding gap occurs. That could be caused by the failLuck_The_Fakers_ure to enact interim or full-year appropriations for the Department of Defense, which results in many members serving without a paycheck until the shutLuck_The_Fakers_down is over. It is not enough for the military to know they will receive back pay after the shut down is over. They need to know that their paycheck will arrive on time.
This is welcome news, but this bill must be passed and signed quick enough to ensure service members don’t miss their pay on April 15. One way to help is to contact your elected officials and tell them to support Gohmert’s ‘Ensuring Pay for Our Military Act.’
Update: I was able to speak to a member of Rep. Gohmert’s staff who explained that military retirees and veterans receiving monthly GI Bill or comp and pen payments were not included in this bill because they are already protected from the affects of a government closure."
I have to assume that this means that unless this passed there will be no pay until later. Anybody hear anything about this?
WC, this is different. Back then, the defense budget was already signed for.
It's not this time. There's a very good likelihood that, at the least, we won't get a paycheck on the 15th.
I doubt that would happen, but if it does... That would be brutal.
With the border agents off work, we could have a new Hispanic holiday!
And here you are sitting at home with your rifles locked up.
They're running out of time now, aren't they?
And last I checked, leadership knows as much about the situation as I do. It's a real clusterfork.
You got basically one more day and I promise you isn't going to stop it. And it won't be as short as the two in 95.
The notion that the House, Senate, and President can't sit down and find 60 Billion of cuts out of a multi trillion dollar budget is absolutely obscene.
Why would I lock up something so useful?
I'm pretty sure there are prevision to continue pay to those "critical" ares of government.
But...
I was recently very wrong on something. I'm only human and do make mistakes...
LOL @ the dip house wanting all the cuts to come from the EPA and Planned Parenthood.
Really? All the cuts?
Trust me, I'm pretty engaged on this issue, and every article I've read states that the military isn't getting paid, because they never originally approved the defense budget after October. (Which is why I can't get supplies I need for this shop. Grrr...)

Now there are "essential" and "non-essential" personnel. Nearly all military will be deemed "essential", which means we're still working, just not getting any pay. "Non-essential" will be asked to stay home, I guess. On the eve of a possible government shutdown, hundreds of thousands of federal workers and members of the military are at risk of not collecting a paycheck until after Congress reaches a deal to fund the government.
FWIW, Obama threatened a veto on the proposed "Fund troops" bill coming through. While I obviously would like to be paid, I understand why he would call for a veto. The whole "military not getting paid" thing is a big issue, and he doesn't want the Republicans to have an easy out by looking like the guys who made sure the troops got paid.
Still sucks though.
The president's party had plenty of time to come up with a budget for this year, way back when they were in control of the exec and legislative branch (aka a couple of months ago). Yet another political cluster brought on by spineless politicians more focused on getting reelected rather than actually serving their fellow citizens.
No money for the war? Send everyone home then.
They already said that ain't happening. We'll still fight; we just won't get paid for it. How that works, I have no idea.
I like how the Democrats finally decided they weren't going to cave on some thing, and it involves me getting paid.![]()
