Great article. As far as I'm concerned, BB is the coach here as long as he wants to be, and after that I'd still love to see him as a Bill Parcells-type consultant to help whoever takes over for him, but it's time he scales back his power. There needs to be a defensive coordinator who can worry about evaluating defensive talent and helping defensive personnel improve.
The way BB has mismanaged this defense (in particular the secondary) has turned a defense with tons of young talent in 2009 and 2010 that had shown flashes of great potential into a jumbled up mess.
Cutting Darius Butler after a sop re slump was stupid.
Cutting Leigh Bodden less than a year after he had reconstructive shoulder surgery (and a shoulder injury affects a corner more than you'd think) was stupid.
Cutting Brandon Meriweather without having any idea who his replacement would be was stupid. Meriweather was an idiot who had it coming, but he's still better than any safety on the team not named Patrick Chung.
Using two 2nd round picks on Brandon es and Jermaine Cunningham then switching to a 4-3 a year later so they have no use was stupid.
Making it so generating pressure was dependent on Albert Haynesworth suddenly giving a was really stupid.
Deciding to switch to a 4-3 because "the lockout made it so there wasn't enough time to teach a complex 3-4 in training camp" when nearly every player on the defense had much more experience with a 3-4 was the latest example of BB over thinking things and trying to do too much.
When Todd Haley pisses Romeo Crennel off like he did Charlie Weis, New England needs to give him a call.
Bill O'Brien has received a ton of criticism as long as he's been calling plays but I'm fairly content with how he's done as offensive coordinator as I don't think anyone realizes how many holes this offense has. Having one of the most productive passing games in the NFL with your only threats at TE and in the slot requires a good offensive coordinator even if Tom Brady is the QB. It's not like 2009 when their yards came from throwing it up and having Moss go get it.
Amazing how bad the secondary is considering the number of picks used to shore it up the last few years. WTF is going on with McCourty? Michael Clayton syndrome?
Time to use some of those 48 picks to trade up for some defensive playmakers. Front seven scares nobody.
This year? Defense is beyond reproach so why not add Moss and lay the wood on opposing defenses?
Do it, BB.
That's exactly it. He's used sooooooo many 1st and 2nd rounders to shore up the secondary but has done a job developing most of them and has been way too impatient with a lot of them.
