Agree. Mascherano actually plays in the back at Barça because otherwise he wouldn't play. He's a picapiedra. Also, to trot out a 31 year old Demichelis who is likely not going to make it to the World Cup (you would hope!!!!), then play Samuel, who is 33 but a much more solid defender.

I just don't buy we don't have defenders, period. We just always play the same guys. Give Pareja, Garay a shot. As I said before, bring in some of the kids from the U19.

As far as the midfield, I keep saying the same thing: We need a playmaker and good wings. When teams pack it up, we keep going to the middle and playing into their hands.

If I had to put together a team for a game like this one against Venezuela, I would've played:

    Andujar

    ................Mascherano................Otamendi ................

    Zabaleta.......................................... ......Clemente

    ................................Gago.............. ..................

    ................................Pastore........... .....................

    Messi............................................. ...Di Maria

    ................Palacios................Higuain... .............

And I tell DiMaria and Messi to go towards the outside. It's ok sometimes to cut inside, but we have no play on the wings.

Zabaleta and Clemente can play both the back 4 when Venezuela attacks or the midfield when we have the ball.

That's a good overall lineup...and if Aguero weren't injured he would where Palacios is, and that's a solid squad. It would be a very attacking team since Zabaleta and Clemente can both come forward and play with the wings, and Pastore and Gago can provide good passing for the scorers, as can Messi.

    I blame Maradona!
    He sucks as a coach!

    Argentina sucks because of him!
Bring a good coach such as Basile, Pekerman, Sabella....oh wait, our team sucks with them too...how is that possible?
Maradona was supposed to be the problem, not the players...

you forgot riquelme, its his fault the team underachieves because of his diva at ude and lack of hustle. Now that his cancer is gone, everyone is happy and running fast and the team is playing to its potential

This is definitely the best venezuela team ever, but the fact is that we are losing to teams that argentina hasnt lost to EVER/ losing by margins we havent lost in ever, despite having the best player in the space time continuum. His consistent 5 goal passes yesterday must have come while I was taking a pee (I think I heard he successfully dribbled past someone for one of those goal passes). Still, I seriously doubt that anyone before or after will ever approach his level- I mean seriously, how could it be possible for such consistent majesty to repeat itself?

Its not time to panic, but I would like to see one of two things happen:

    1) Be defensive, by holding on to the ball. Yesterday, we were so careless that we could barely keep possession, and had a bunch of crap defenders in for no justifiable reason. I think if we want to play like this Pastore has to play and messi has to be either a forward or a wing. Our defense sucks but if we can keep the ball we can protect our D. It could make for really boring games but Id rather be boring than historically bad.

    2) Play to our strengths and be super offensive, like Maradona tried. If you dont score or create very clear chances in the first 30-40 minutes, then make subs and look for better match ups. With the amount and quality of forwards we have, against rivals that for the most part hole up and counter, it is inexcusable to not even create chances. Yesterday we had what, like 3-4 shots on goal? Its one thing to get shut down by germany, another by venezuela.

Its hard to have faith in Sabella after he insisted with Rojo despite 4 terrible halfs and resisted making subs till the very end despite being completely ineffective on offense. And the players need to play with a sense of urgency, the only ones who looked mildly interested in winning the game yesterday were masche, higuain, messi, and palacio for the few minutes he was there, everyone else looked like they were in practice. still, I dont think there is much more than this available, so no choice but to support them...

The problem with Freezelme is figuring out when he's going to quit on the team again. Might as well play somebody that wants to play, like Pastore.

Why do everyone realizes that Demichelis, Milito, Burdisso, etc. suck except for whoever is in charge of the NT? Try anyone except those guys that have already shown that suck.

Campagnaro is one of the best defenders in Italy and yet nobody gives him a try, I wouldn't be shocked if the NT coach didn't know who he is.

Mascherano has played like a year now at CB in the best team in the World at the highest of levels, and again nobody tries him there at least for a half to see how he does.

Di Maria is the purest winger we have and Sabella plays him as center miedfielder, re ed.

    Sosa over Pastore? Really?

5 defenders against Venezuela? to play 5 defenders is bad enough but to do it against Venezuela is... I don't know what to say.

I'm tired of these stupid s ing up so bad with so many World class players to choose from.

As much as I hate to say it, Mourinho would do wonders with this team. His 4-2-3-1 with the high defensive line is what this team needs IMO.

    Romero

    Zabaleta Mascherano Campagnaro Rojo

    Bolatti Alvarez

    Pastore/Aguero Messi Di Maria

    Higuain

Like I said, with a high defensive line and a lot of pressure in the opponents' half, and with the three guys behind Higuain changing positions constantly over the course of the game.

At this point, you have to think money is involved somehow.

    Romero

    Zabaleta Mascherano Campagnaro Rojo

    Bolatti Alvarez

    Pastore/Aguero Messi Di Maria

    Higuain
    Rojo? Really? smh

Yeah, in Estudiantes he proved to be a serviciable left back, besides he's tall and good on the air something Argentina needs and seeing how there aren't many options on that position I would give him a couple more tries, he's still very young.

I don't like Messi on the wing on that formation 'cause he would have too many defensive obligations, the wings on a 4-2-3-1 have to come down to miedfield when the team is defending, I prefer Messi to rest when the team doesn't have the ball.

Some players play great in their teams and suck in the NT (Cagna comes to mind, but there's plenty of other examples). Maybe he's too young, but the kid had plenty of opportunities. Bring in Clemente, Insua... heck, try Monzon.

And good in the air? Did you watch the game last night? Mother er fell asleep.

I used to root for Argentina in world compe ions because they played the right way. Not too dirty, not too defensively. But that is thing of the past.

the main problems I see is that
    1) they make terrible mistakes on defense or midfield. That did not use to happen before. I don't know if it's coaching or the talent pool is just not that good. But these new players are just not in the same calibre as past
    2) they are disorganized on offense. they don't know what to do. I think this is because they want to involve Messi on most plays but really, Messi is not a true #10. They don't have a playmaker.

we have no iden y, and are always playing for results instead of by principle.

Also, how long are we going to keep going with the "they dont play with each other often enough" excuse? This same nucleus has been going for 3 coaches now, since 2008. If that's really the case, then lets play with local players who can put in more work together. Its yet another example of the schizophrenia from the coach/staff. We dont need messi to beat Bolivia at home.

speaking of which (and I realize DAF is going to become extremely upset about this), Messi needs to relax. against bolivia he was forcing and even being selfish. I understand he's trying to put the team on his back, but thats not the way to do it. go to the corners and pull away defenders from the goal so you can set someone else up, dont try to slalom down the middle through 5 players.

unbelievable, messi gets fouled, and with the play stopped and the ref watching, a colombian player hammers the ball into a prone messi's head and the ref does nothing. Argentina sucks but that is just piss poor refereeing.
