Well, I'm part gay. So that's fine with me.

I understand the appeal of Linux, but my computer use, while frequent, is pretty basic. I don't do anything with them that has made switching to Linux feel worth the trouble.
    What is part gay?

    Bi?

I've never used Linux. Can you explain to me the desire to have it?
Mostly being able to easily automate things with the bash s and with tons of programs written to be used together in it, though there is also the allure of having good free software with no nag screens nor limited functionality. LOL @ people paying $120 for a sucking word processor when an infinitely more complicated and difficult to program game is $60.

And this is going to sound funny, but one of the things I really like in UNIX-type systems is how they handle copy+paste. Instead of doing

    1. highlight text
    2. right click
    3. select copy
    4. right click where you want the text pasted
    5. select paste

    you just

    1. highlight text
    2. center click where you want the text pasted

I cannot believe Windows isn't setup by default to have this great behavior.

Even though I still use Windows, I would say it's comparable to having a program that becomes bloatware over time. Just becomes sluggish and full of crap that you don't want.

Linux on the other hand, you can install it in it's most basic form with almost no dependencies, handful of drivers to get it running on your system and no programs giving you the option to install whatever you want and need over time. Or it also gives you the option in coming with different flavors of your favorite distro with pre-compiled programs already installed in it. Even in the latter option, it doesn't contain the bloat that Windows has.

    +1

    That's my current setup.
    +1

Another one for Windows 7 (64-bit) and Ubuntu.

I had Ubuntu back in 2008 and eventually got rid of it. Re-installed it recently and I'm quite amazed by the progress.

Thanks for that copy + paste tip BB

It has nothing to do with validation...

most people spend a lot of time on a computer...a lot of interacting with this machine...

    pc's have no charm...no personality...no uniqueness...

a mac is all that and more...if you haven't owned one...just go to the apple store and spend a little time...you will eventually see the light...

and forget about your gay cop fantasies for a little while....it's ok...you will be fine without it...
That's gotta be the dumbest justification for owning a computer that I have ever read.

If you're ever bored and want to run Linux without installing it on your system, I suggest using a virtualization program like VMware Player. If you're into messing around on your computer, it can be a fun project learing the ins and outs of Linux and without any risk. It won't ruin your current setup.

They don't even need to do all that. They can just run linux off a live cd or even a flash drive.

I actually own a mac and it's the most worthless machine I have. It was cool before I knew how to actually work on computers as I do now. Mac offers nothing outside of support for other mac devices. By nothing I mean absolutely nothing. As someone stated above Ubuntu has made strides and if I were forced to buy a new laptop, I'd install Ubuntu over Mac and Windows.

The only reason I have windows is for gaming and that's it. Ubuntu handles everything else better than other platforms.

In fact I tried turning my macbook pro 2.2 into a Linux machine and the machine is such crap it can't even boot the Linux cd/usb. Anyway, Osx is basically just a very old kernel of Linux that has been streamlined for people who love a one button mouse.

I have never really like Mac. I do say that they do have some pretty kick ass stuff out there if you are into multimedia.

Personally I am not into that kind of thing and just have a mac for video editing etc. Other than that I use my PC for everything else.
