46" is not too big if you aren't using it as a monitor.
Get the biggest you can afford. If you cannot afford a quality one, I would just keep my money. They sell you the "feeling" of a flat panel for a few hundred, but what you get is crap.
Insignia is made by the lowest bidder on the needed parts. Samsung sells some of their panels that don't pass Samsung QC to Insignia, but other manufacturers also sell parts to them.

I think there are only 2-3 LCD panel manufacturers in the world.
My advice? Get LED/LCD over Plasmas.. get either Sony, Samsung, or Vizio and get 120hz.. if it's just for you, just get a 40".
So I upgraded by bedroom 36" with this... pretty pleased so far.
If he wants a lower price but a nice set, get a Vizio. Nobody really talks about those tvs and the color and contrast on them are quite good.
Samsung makes the best imo, but their price reflects it a lot. Sony makes a good tv, but is much too expensive (interestingly enough, I have a Bravia but I paid less than retail for it).
To be honest, the brand doesn't always make a difference. My first LCD was bought by my father in law off of the home shopping network. Some brand I've NEVER heard of, yet with a little tweaking, it has a great picture with bright colors and nice contrast.
But yeah, my recommendation, all things considered (quality, price) is Vizio.
You need to tell people how far away from the set you'll be. HD doesn't matter much if you're not at optimum distance. It a lot closer than you might expect.
I've heard that if you're fairly close to the TV and the set is less than 50", then you won't really see the difference between 720p and 1080p. Not sure how accurate that is, but it would seem to make sense is the TVs were say 32".
I personally wouldn't go larger than 46" in my apartment, and even that's stretching it a bit. 42" would be about my preference. I have a 32" 1080p LCD in my living room and a 32" 720p LCD in my bedroom.
Again, I'd say go with a Vizio, although there are some Samsung 42" plasma 720p sets going for fairly cheap now as well. Plasma will get you better color and contrast than an LCD, and anyone who says different is lying. Then again, when deciding between LCD and Plasma, you have to take into account the lighting conditions of the room.
An LED can give a plasma a run for its money (I think they're about equal really) but those are more expensive.
So my final suggestions (taking into account money, size, value and quality) is either a Vizio LCD (1080p at 42") or a Samsung plasma (720p at 42").
Most of your viewing isn't going to be 1080p anyhow, even if the TV is capable.
Yep. Most channels broadcast either 1080i or 720p. DirectTV says they do 1080p, but I've never seen it so I couldn't tell you if it's accurate. And even if I have seen it, I probably couldn't anyway.
I bet IM already spent his money and we're still here talking about it![]()
Still have it. Looking king everything Ito account and am thinking about saving up a bit more to be financially secure before I buy it.
Not a big fan of Samsung. A few years back they made a ton of tv's with poorly spec'd capacitors and they failed left and right. That was a few years ago, should they be forgiven? Did they learn their lesson? Probably but still. Certainly they do make nice panels generally speaking, but do they make a quality television?
they repaired em for free at least, but it was a largely silent repair program you had to inquire about.
It's more about quality control than anything else to me. Why they were using 10 volt cheapo capacitors on 12 volt lines instead of better quality higher voltage capacitors is the real issue.
every company has issues like this, remember the sony laptop batteries?
Also, this is the TV I want next, just waiting for price to drop:

I have a friend who works for Samsung and I get to use his employee discount. It generally costs me a 12 pack though.
Aside from flicker, there's not much difference tbh.
Idk
My Samsung is pretty badass TBH
I bought it in 2009, FWIW
What's the discount? I would imagine the 12-pack for the discount is a pretty good deal for you![]()
tbh, we bought a small "internet-enabled" HDTV from Vizio last year for my mother in law, and the whole apps just got in the way and there was no way to turn it off. Incredibly annoying (and we bought the "internet-enabled" model because it was on sale).
At least with this Samsung you can pretty much not use any of it and it doesn't get in your way.
