No...Cain didn't know China was a nuclear power
Herman Cain Worried About China ‘Develop(ing) Nuclear Capability,’ Despite 50-Year Nuclear Program
http://www.mediaite.com/tv/herman-ca...uclear-programThe post-sexual harassment Herman Cain media blitz that has kept up all week has done a great deal to understand the workings of the Cain campaign in crisis, but there is one other element of Cain’s platform that seems to be getting hit the hardest by his exposure to the press: his foreign policy credentials. Tonight on The O’Reilly Factor, Cain essentially said he was ready to declare war on Iran; last night on PBS’s Newshour, he told Judy Woodruff he suspected China was “trying to develop nuclear capability,” despite having nuclear weapons since 1964.
Woodruff began the interview asking whether China was “a potential military threat to the United States” in Cain’s eyes. Cain answered in the affirmative, and responded that in order to neutralize the threat, he would “outgrow China” economically. Then he noted that the threat was assuaged significantly by the fact that “we already have superiority in terms of our military capability.” “I plan to get away from making cutting our defense a priority,” he noted, stating his motto as “peace through strength and clarity.” He then turned to the threat he saw he would need to stop: “they’ve indicated that they’re trying to develop nuclear capability and they want to develop more aircraft carriers like we have.”
The problem with this claim, of course, is that China is not exactly “trying” to develop nuclear capability any more than America is– they staged their first nuclear weapons test in 1964. Cain didn’t clarify what he meant by that phrase, but it certainly doesn’t make him look particularly knowledgeable to not know that China has nuclear weapons. Woodruff, on her part, did not comment on his statements and moved on to another topic, seemingly unaware of the fact that Cain’s statement seemed to belie the fact that he had no idea that China was a nuclear nation, and that this is common knowledge in the political world
And why do we care? Seriously. Do you expect a presidential candidate to be 100% knowledgeable of world events? They have people to brief them of facts as they develop. It is such old news when China became a nuclear power, and has never to my knowledge been reason to remind people.
How many people know that China tested their first bomb in 1964? that is how old this news is. What reason has there been to remind people thy are a nuclear power?
Not falling for this. You're trolling again aren't you?
Am I?
This guy was not interested in politics as a game plan from birth like so many others seem to be. Yes. I am serious that I don't expect a president to be all knowing. I do however expect him to be surrounded by good advisers, and make sound decisions from that.
Knowing China has nukes is pretty ing basic foriegn affairs. That's like saying we need to step up security on the border with East Germany.
This. It's not as if he was made to give any details about said subject, just know about it....on any level.
He failed.
Is it?
Until recently, when is the last time it was in some current event coverage? I don't recall hearing about China nukes for a very long time, until this question came about.
you need to hear about, from time to time, or you'll forget about it?
I never forgot about it, but it was a long time ago I heard about it. I was interested, and worked in the military nuclear theater. What about those who never paid attention to such affairs of the past?
yeah, i know. you said you knew where all the nukes were. funniest i ever heard.
like this cain fella? presidential material. What about those who never paid attention to such affairs of the past?
