Yes Riley and West (Red too) are the gold standard.

Mitch and Pop/Buford are silver medalists ...
    Yup

But RC and Pop are still the best at stealing hidden gems in a draft

Phil Jackson: played in NY, coached Chcago and LA

Pat Riley: played in LA coached LA, NY and Miami

West: Played in LA and GM in LA

None of these guys have faced a challenge. Their greatest obstacles to overcome have been egos. There's rarely been an issue with lack of resources, money, talent, all that in years they actually competed.

To be fair, Riley got the most out of an limited offense in NY

Not his fault if he ran into MJ and Miller

You telling me that if you were a NBA coach/GM you'd choose to build a winner in Charlotte or you'd want the bankroll of a L.A. or Miami? San Antonio is a rarity as is OKC--those are the only two small market teams that have had success (though OKC still has to deal with a lengthier time). I think it would be an easy choice--coach the team with an unlimited will to win at all costs or you could be looking to land that once-in-a-sports-lifetime SA or OKC job.

Any coach would want a setup like that and having one doesn't mean the coach needed it to win, however it does cloud the issue as far as effectiveness of the coach. That's why I think Larry Brown is the best coach of all time based on how his teams improved after he took over. His negative is that he couldn't get along with management and quit everything he started, but just look at how his teams did. That's what makes a great coach, and what identifies them. Coaches like Riley can be obscured in the fog of talent. We all know Spo is nothing, but if he ends up with 4 or 5 rings, suddenly he's in the talks.

San Antonio had it in a shorter time because they tanked.

Because we didn't pick a Kwame Brown as the 1st overall tbh. Lots of teams get 1st overall picks, not many win 4 rings in a decade.

I know as an Angels fan I used to loathe it when the Yankees would slurp up all the top-notch free agents...now that the Angels molded themselves into a similar club it had kinda caught me off guard. It doesn't always necessitate a good thing as a fan, but I do feel grateful to follow a team like the Lakers.

Would Mitch pulled off a deal of this caliber with the same players involved but in a small market such as San Antonio?
Let's compare the two teams' salaries for next season after calculating for luxury tax and see what the answer would be.

    Spurs' salary: $63.7m

    Lakers' salary: $125.2m

    Answer:

He'd have to shed at least 30m in flat salary to even be able to afford to pay the team this year. So either Kobe + Artest are gone, or Dwight and Gasol are gone. Or some combination of things to get the salary down. Definitely wouldn't happen with a team that can't afford more than double the salary cap, which is most of them.

Mitch learned from Jerry "Mr Clutch" West.

Just when LAL looked like they would have another second round exit they go and deliver a clutch play to get them to the WCF AT WORST.

    Mitch has jokes too...

“Our feeling was, no matter what anybody said, let’s just get him to Los Angeles and we’ll take our chances,” said Kupchak. “In fact, in all my years there’s only one player who left Los Angeles, and I’m still not sure why he did it, and that’s A.C. Green.”
