At least Twitter has it right (so far) with the "promoted" ad tweets. Very simple to scroll fast and they aren't everywhere like ads on facebook - especially the mobile client recently. Following comedians on Twitter is the best

But it's not just babies....I have a relative who is a "pageant mom" of teens. I just didn't need to see 100+ shots of her brats' big hair and giant teeth every week (not to mention all 900 of her moronic friends comments "Oh my god!!! She's soooo beautiful!!!") so she also disappeared from my newsfeed without much difficulty

How about when you are out and about and you take a pic of you and your friends being out for the night and someone has to throw in the "Where's my invite" or "Thanks for the invite"? I hate that. I don't know how many times I have replied with a "next time" or "I was invited at the last minute". If I wanted you there, I would have invited yo ass.

Foremost to me being news and sports.
For example, how often during the Arab spring was there a situation where locals tweeting about their experiences the only news to come out of their respective countries? Same in Iran during the green revolution. Twitter is quite often way out in front of the traditional press, although you have to realize that it's also very easy to mislead and lie when something is very difficult to substantiate.
I also think Facebook can be a good way to organize people for worthy causes. It's not all bad
But, as with most things in Amurrican "social media", it's been taken over and used mostly by fat mouth breathers for innocuous bull and vanity
I hate the people who about everything every day and add FML at the end. I also have a few friends who check into the ER all the damn time, I know they just want the "oh is everything ok" comments.
If facebook has taught me one thing it's to stay the away from most my cousins, they are ing whiners/ talkers/feel sorry for me bull ters.
