I still don't see it. Walt is entirely too dependent upon his rationalization that all of the horrible he's done has been in order to protect and maintain his family life. The perceived nobility of his intentions has afforded him a moral high ground that his ego just won't let him give up.
That was, if I remember correctly, in the episode after "I.F.T.," the same one in which he storms off to Beneke's office and tries to throw a potted plant through his window. Felt more to me like a desperate attempt at payback than a genuine desire to someone other than Skyler.
I agree that it was a spur of the moment thing.
Up until the last few minutes of the last episode, I would not have put it past Walt to cheat on Skyler. His morals have been compromised, and his ego has grown ridiculously large. He lost sight of his original goal a while ago, and he knew it. He probably thought he could get away with anything.
His going straight (although not for long) probably changed things.
Jane? Nah, even if she was hotter than Marie or Lydia the probably got HIV from shooting that heroin.
The principal or vice-principle or whatever from Walt's high school ain't bad. And the rich from Walt's flashbacks to academia.
I would've done a grand slam on the waitress from Denny's in the first episode...then settle into fun times with Lydia. Marie is looking better of late, too, so that wouldn't be a bad time either.
