I wanted to use Carnival since that was the best Mardi Gras name available. Jazz and VooDoo weren't available. Brass is just like a minor league version of Jazz.

Why would a basketball team use a baseball bat in their logo?
They most likely found an old storage unit full of NO Pelican merchandise and that influenced their decision to go with Pelicans instead of a good name, like Knights.
That was their minor-league baseball team; makes sense to use it for a minor-league basketball team.
New Orleans shouldn't have a logo without the BP logo on it, IMO TBH FWIW
