so defensive rebounds don't have anything to do with defense? 1on1 defense ain't the only factor to gauge someone's overall defensive ability imho.
No, just as offensive boards aren't considered a sign of a good offense.

Defenders are defending the basket. Rebounding is not about defending the basket. If you give up the offensive board, you then begin your defense of the basket.

    So it goes:

    Defense of the basket

transition to cleaning up the glass

transition to offense (if you rebound) or

transition back to defense (if you give up the offensive board).

Bargnani is actually a decent 1 on 1 defender, tbh..his team D sucks, but there are many other players that fail at both aspects..I wouldn't rank him as worst..

It makes more sense to rank them by position tbh, factoring different positional roles on defense..

good offensive rebounding is an important tribute of good defense actually. if you get the ball from teammates, it depends on your offensive ability how good you'll do next whether pass the ball back to teammates or shoot it yourself. if you grab it off the board or from the opponents' hands, like a rebound or a steal, it's defensive ability imho

Handling the ball up top is a defensive ability as well. You defend the ball. You aren't on defense however as the terms "offense" and "defense" are about the basket, not the ball.

it ain't just about the ball when you grab a rebound. the purpose of defense is to take back the possession of ball and rebounding is an essential part of defense, whether its defensive rebounding or offensive. you might argue that "well, we can just play no D and let them opponents put the ball through our basket with ease, and the ball is back in our hand", then i would cringe at it tbh
