I'll put the concept of dignity and paychecks tied together after the concept of getting paid for doing actual work. These ers are half the year in recess while their 'staff' do all the work, then when they actually show up, they get nothing done. If Congress would be a private sector company, 3/4 of these s (or more) would've been fired already.
You're missing my point. We live in a society where the prestige and draw of a job is tied to how much people make at that job. We complain about how ty our politicians are all the time and its quite an important position to have. If you want to have better politicians, then maybe like any private sector company you have to s out the money to attract the talent. Whether you think they do work or not, I'd be surprised if you say they don't have some of the most important jobs in the country.

I understand your point, but running for public office is a choice they made. When you're a public official, you're not doing it for the money, you're doing it as a service to your country and cons uents (or you should be). I get their staffers are probably going to bear the blunt of decisions such as this one, but the public official's prestige is not in the paycheck, but in the fact that the person decided to devote it's time serving other people and that they managed to win a popularity contest to get there (in other words, the prestige is given by the position in and of itself).

Being a US senator is prestigious because of what it entails to get there and the decision making responsibilities of the position. Whether they make 15K or 150K should be really irrelevant.

It's a good idea but I don't think us paying them more would make them more ethical, when it comes to them making millions from their inside deals.

a strong middle class is often the symbol of a healthy economy but there's surely no way in you could sustain a middle class that consists mainly of federal workers imho. we need more ambitious lads to start their own businesses in the private sector and even though the payoff will not come anytime soon, we must plant the seeds for the future tbh

i wouldn't have no problem with paying big bucks to public servants when/if the government is rich as like the commies government in china, but it doesn't make no sense to maintain the old living standards for the public servants when the US government is probably the poorest of the world with an astronomical amount of debt. the debt shouldn't be distributed to those who're not government employees, they already paid taxes to feed the lazyass maggots, and its now about time for the maggots to return their money tbh

Meanwhile, in reality, this is not the case. We expect people to put up with the bull of American office for prestige and then wonder why we have so many stupid politicians.

Oh I definitely don't think we'd get them to be more ethical. I simply think if we want the best in there we'd likely have to pay them as the best. The truth simply is that like almost every other public service we pay lip service to it being important but in reality we don't value it all that much. Money talks louder than anything we say about prestige, IMO.

I would argue that we don't have 'stupid' politicians. We simply have very rich and very corruptible politicians that look out for the special interests that put them on the job instead of their cons uents (us). There's nothing stupid about that, it's simply part of a broken system and their salary (or prestige) has nothing to do with it.
