AJ got his big payday in Denver... don't feel bad for him. I don't understand the hate for him from some in the forum.
I didn't feel bad for Avery! I felt bad for ME!

I hated him even last season when he stunk it up against the Lakers. Him and Turkaglu were on my list. I got over that at the start of this season and now he is a valuable part of the team. Turkaglu will never leave my list. Never.

I never hated Horry. I felt a certain animosity towards him whenever he played against us, just as I do for any other player who has burned the Spurs on occasion, but that's to be expected.

I did, however, mock the out of him after he missed that shot in the '03 Semis and then threw his little tantrum on the court. Which I feel bad for now. He made up for that one.

People threw the traitor label on him last year after the Lakers debacle happened, which I find completely unjustified. Sometimes, you just can't make yourself play well. This is even more likely to happen in a high-pressure situation, such as against your old team in the Playoffs.

We saw the same thing happen to Brent Barry this year, but we were fortunate enough to get past Seattle, or now everyone would want his head on the chopping block, too.

While I don't hate any player...I harbored serious dislike for Horry when he played for Houston and buried those shots against the Spurs in the 95 WCF....but I have always subscribed to the belief that once you put on the Spur....all of your past sins are forgiven!

The only players I dislike are Shaq and Kobe, and both for reasons that extend beyond the basketball court.

Players are supposed to try to beat other teams. That is what basketball is all about. You can't hate them for that.

Ray Allen is a whiny little sometimes, too, but he already got his.

I always hated Horry. Especially when he was in LAL. He loved it there but misses Texas to be with his kids more so he had to go there.

Link? I have never heard him say he loved LA. Like I said, he always seemed to me to be uncomfortable in his own skin there, not happy, fish out of water. He seems content now, if not ecstatic. He was a misfit in LA.

I didn't hate him in terms of wishing him herpes from a hooker or that a house would fall on his mother or anything like that. I hated him the way I 'hate' Derek Fisher - I hate his shot and what it did, and I wouldn't ask for his autograph if I saw him on the street and I mock him whenever we play.

But how can one hate Robert Horry? He was too cute when he was piggy backing on Duncan in the 99 championship SI issue.

And that 'hate' stopped the second I heard he signed with us.

I hated Horry when he was a Rocket and a Laker.

I hated the way he played against the Lakers in the '04 playoffs. It seemed like such an obvious tank job because he had an incredible series against the Grizzlies. That three pointer he missed in the 4th Qtr in game five wasn't even close. He stated that he was trying too hard against the Lakers. But I wish he said that right after we were eliminated. Then I wouldn't have believed the rumors about him celebrating with the Lakers after game six. I hated him the entire summer of '04 for that.

When he was brought back, I didn't know how to feel about it. But with the breakup of the Lakers, maybe the "trying too hard" scenario was dead. I was kinda of worried that if we played the Heat, he might "try too hard" against Shaq.

Bottom line was that I felt Horry owed the Spurs some clutch shooting in the playoffs for his '04 performance against the Lakers. And he did exactly that. He paid back San Antonio, huge. I no longer have any ill feelings toward him because he has paid his debt.

Personally, capturing the le this season gives me a restored faith in the world. Things do happen for a reason, but with hard work and perserverance, things usually workout in the end.

Technically, Horry helped us win two championships with a made and a missed three . I don't think that I will ever really like Robert Horry, but I have tremendous respect for him as a player and his composure in crunch time. He definatly had a tremendous impact on this year's championship run and I'm glad that he resigned with the Spurs.

I probably didn't like Horry as a person because he was a laker...

but as a player, I always knew he could contribute.

My sentiments exactly! I hated him during those times (even after last years playoffs). I love him now.

I often wondered if he was really happy during those six years in LA. With all the drama and the allegations of selfishness, Rob just seemed like a "fish out of water".

Horry himself said he felt team camraderie(sp?) and trust for one another and only metioned Houston and S.A. as examples. Horry just wants to win, the spotlight. Although It comes with being a champion. Dude got big nuts, big nuts, just like Tony said. He gives you his all and it took him a full year to really find his niche in the Spurs offense and defense. Now you see him bailing Tim out, talking to Tony after airballing jumpers in Game 7 and all season he's been getting back and just throwing people's on turnovers when going for layups on the other end. Horry will retire a SPUR with rings number 7 and 8. He aint through, he'll find a way to contribute. I mean who really thought he'd fly in and dunk on Rip like he did? Respect.

There were likes 5 minutes or so when I really hated Robert Horry. It was Game 3 of the 2001 NBA Finals and Big Shot Rob scored 12 4th quarter points, including a 3 from the baseline with 46 secs left after the fat man had fouled out.

The Sixers have been nowhere near the NBA le since.

But I've always maintained a respect for the way he can make big shots in crunch time. You hate it when it happens to your team, but you got to wonder how he manages to do it. He's amazing in that respect.

Hopefully Marks can come back soon so we can give him a try and move Horry back to the 11th or 12th spot in the rotation where he belongs.
Nice find. I probably had five posts when that was written and I still don't have that many now. But I don't doubt that I hated his guts. I was one of the first few people that started using the double-agent tagline for him. Somewhere is the archives is an extended rant about him from me. But my perception at the time was that he was playing decently enought to steal minutes from Malik and with Malik out of the rotation, he tanked the Lakers series. Just to aid in the conspiracy is that it was his old team.

Then I moved to the idea that he just didn't have anything left in the tank. I agreed with timvp that the clutchness was gone. But obviously I was wrong.

To echo BigZak's comment, it wasn't until halfway through this season that I saw the light. The guy just wants to win. I'll buy that he wanted to bury the Lakers so badly that he wound up doing the opposite. But this year, it was obvious that he just knows what he needs to do to get the W. And after his performance in the playoffs, I'm glad he's going to retire as a Spur.

I'm just now reading this thread.

Yeah, he went a good year without hitting clutch shots. Make that two years since he went like 3-50 with the Lakers in 2003 from downtown in the playoffs.

But he bounced back in 2005 with the most clutch performance ever. I've always liked Horry, even when he was hitting big shots against the Spurs.

I'll apologize for calling him out for not being clutch and for Pop to stop playing him in the fourth quarters, but that was regular season Robert Horry I was calling out. When Playoff Bob shows up, he's a whole new person.

And last playoffs, he probably had the biggest part ever in a championship run for a guy who didn't even average 10 points a game.

If it makes you feel better, I proposed the name Horry Ellis to Kori as the name of our first born. For real.

^ You can feel the love now, it oozes.

Nah there was quite a bit of hating at the start of the year.. Everyone wondered why he'd be getting Maliks minutes etc.

but that was regular season Robert Horry I was calling out. When Playoff Bob shows up, he's a whole new person.
    Ain't that the truth.
