    Community Rain Dance Steps:

    * On Mondays, everyone with an odd-numbered address is to leave the car out of the garage with the windows rolled down overnight.

    * Tuesday everyone with pick up trucks must place bagged, non-soluble materials such as flour, sugar, or concrete mix in the truck beds and leave the trucks out overnight.

    * Any one with horses should leave the saddles out every night. (preferably the "good" saddle)

    * For Wednesday, everyone with an even-numbered address is to leave the car out of the garage with the windows rolled down overnight.

    I'm on it!

    * Thursdays are convertibles day. Anyone with a convertible or a T-top should leave the tops down overnight.

    * All residents should line dry laundry on Fridays.

So I'll hang all of my unmentionables on the back fence....which backs up to a very busy Harry Wurzbach.

    * Saturdays are car wash day. Everyone should wash their cars and trucks today. Twice if the suds hold up. Once this is completed, a afternoon at the beach or a late day sail is in order.

But it's the dirt that's holding it together....!!

    * Sundays we can mix business with pleasure and attend an outdoor event. The stipulation is that under no cir stances will umbrellas be permitted on premises.

In 1998, we had a wet initial winter/early spring, it stopped raining in March or so, a ridge of high pressure set in & didn't really go away until November...when it rained 20+ inches in 8 hours from a tropical depression that decided to camp out over the weekend on South central Texas.
There was no depression in 1998. What happend in 998 was that we had an upper level low come in from the west and camp out while tapping a hurricane off of the souther pacific coast. The enourmouse amount of moisture and the lack of movement by the low led to training of thunderstorms with rainfall rates of 3+ inches an hour for over a day. You do the math.

While the overall pattern is simmilar, the dynamics nessecary to produce rains of that nature are very rare. Not everytime we have a persistent upper ridge in place does it lead to floods of that magnitude. In fact, they are pretty unrelated in the grand scheme of things.

We are actually in a similar pattern in south Texas to that of 1998. Get ready for another "500" year flood...
Oh ...please not that...part of my house is over 100 years old and the foundation wasn't built to current construction specs...With that 30+ days of rain I had springs bubbling up in my living room...

    Shouldn't you have a pier & beam foundation? That ain't a spring, that's a geyser!

I can commiserate. The oldest part of my house was built in 1890. And it's in better shape than the newer part! They sure had good lumber back then.

*I'm ready to get the out of TX! I don't know how I've survived here this long. I'm a winter girl! I love cold weather! and everything that comes with it. I can't take the heat! My weatherbug is flashing 102 in red. Is that possible??? I need to find a nice cool destination...

*(excuse any sudden outbursts, must be side effects from the heat exhaustion)

Ginofan-lucky you! I'd love to go back to the coast. I wish I could go swimming.

the lumber was great but my house is on top of a hill and was built on solid rock. In the oldest part of the house all the walls are rock (the ones almost two feet thick) and they literally built the walls on the bedrock...then came back in and poured concrete inside the walls. for the floor..then some walls were left natural, some were stucco'd and the living room was paneled in cypress...anyway...with that endless rain the water built up against the bedrock with no place to go and forced its way in under the rock walls and back up through the floor...

I had to help take a group of kids downtown to some historic house called "Casa Navarro." It was some mid-1800s house, meaning no AC. Also, it was boring as absolute . Do this for 4-5 hours, with no water intake, and you can understand why this day has been absolute .

July of 2002 actually. Different, but simmilar situation. Those floods last over a week, but the main day was on July 1. That was also due to an upper level low that moved slowly into the area and was very slow to exit. But, it wasn't the same as 98. 98 was much more concentrated over a smaller area and smaller time frame. That is much more rare.

Overall, much more rain fell in 2002 but it was also over a much wider area. 2 very rare flood events that were alike in some ways but different.

When meteorologists say a 100 year flood, or 500 year flood, it's just an approximation. It doesn't mean that one can't happen for another 100 or 500 years.

The past few summers haven't been all that hot. Especially last year. Remember the highs in the 80s during August? It all evens out over time.

I just have about had enough of all these newscasters and their non-stop ing of the heat.

It's not even that bad. 99 or 100 with a heat index of 103 is ing nothing. And the humidity isn't even that bad.

After living in Tucson where I saw my fair share of 107 degrees days, I can honestly say I'd take desert heat over this any day. At night it got down in the 80s and at least you could go outside and be comfortable and not get eaten alive by mosquitoes. I'm a West Nile victim waiting to happen.

However, the winters there were too dry. Like a dewpoint of 1 with 1% humidity.

I'm visiting a friend in Tucson in a couple of weeks. Even the desert heat is hot there, IMO.

In the Land of Enchantment there are only a limited number of days over 100. I'm heading home to sit out on the deck and watch the sunset right now.
