The people outraged in this thread are the same ones who think shoving someone was a fight in high school. Yoh act like he clotheslined them or roundhouse kicked them in the face. It was a half-hearted kick in the ass and a couple shoves.

I agree with those that think this shouldn't qualify as assault or anything too extreme, but...what he's doing seems to always have the opposite effect he's going for. He's not motivating anyone, just making them miserable. Psycho or not, the guy's a coach.
Im not outraged or think this is worthy of an assault charge or something. But Im not going to respect and go out on the court and fight for a coach like this. Id ing hate the if I was playing for him tbh. Its not like his method works either since Id never even heard of this guy prior to today.
i'm not outraged, i just think he crossed the line. if old school methods like that is fine for you and your future children then more power to ya, i hope it works out for ya. i just wouldn't put up with that from a scrub coach.

at the old s saying this is old school. they probably were raised with heavy hand themselves and they themselves were eventually pushed either into closet sexualism, or serial killer tendencies. that is prevalent in kids that grow up under such abuse

If he's scaring off recruits I'm surprised they didn't just can him. Throwing a ball at a kid's head is unacceptable, that's an easy one. That kick crosses the line too. The rest of it? Meh. None of it strikes me as so horrifically mentally scarring that I worry about any player's well being, but if those are the only motivational tricks he's got in his bag then he's got no business trying to lead a team.
This isn't old school. This coach is a pussy. I understand grabbing a players jersey, demonstrating in a physical manner to a player how to box out properly, etc. I understand yelling and getting in a player's face. But the two handed running shoves out of nowhere, the dodge ball horse throws of the basketball..that's just 100% pussy right there.

I don't find his behavior all that horrible. I just think it's stupid, childish, and non-effective. I'd have more of a problem if he was punching, choking, or slapping kids. Throwing basketballs at them and calling them gay epithets just seems dumb. What happened to just making the kids run wind sprints until they puke? I'm sure the kids probably feared losing their scholarships, but one of them at some point should have just thrown a basketball right back at him.

Ive played BBall all my life, even a little bit in college. I have NEVER had a coach lay a hand on a player, or call him names. Yeah, yelling and maybe cussing. But getting physical is straight up PUSSY! and wrong. Oh, and we won championships. So dont even go there with that bull of needing to be an ass in order to win.

Yeah.....there was no over the top, horribly scarring mental abuse type going on there, but the guy just seemed to be spazzing out and generally not knowing what he was doing and the practice didn't seem like it had a point or direction. Just an old dude lobbing basketballs at people calling them gots.

This morning I issued the following statement regarding the decision to terminate the employment of Scarlet Knights men’s basketball coach Mike Rice. Because of the seriousness of the situation and the national attention it has drawn, I wanted to let you know about this decision as soon as possible.
“Rutgers University has a long and proud history as one of the nation’s most diverse and welcoming academic ins utions. Coach Rice’s abusive language and actions are deeply offensive and egregiously violate the university’s core values.
“When video excerpts of basketball practices were reviewed last fall by Athletic Director Tim Pernetti, he immediately notified me and sought the advice of internal and outside counsel. The university hired an independent investigator to look into this matter thoroughly. Based on the external investigator's findings and recommendations, Tim and I agreed that Coach Rice should be suspended, penalized $75,000 in fines and lost salary, ordered to undergo anger management counseling, and put on notice that his behavior would be closely monitored. Tim Pernetti also made it clear to Coach Rice that there would be zero tolerance for additional infractions. Tim kept me fully apprised and I supported his actions.
“Yesterday, I personally reviewed the video evidence, which shows a chronic and pervasive pattern of disturbing behavior. I have now reached the conclusion that Coach Rice cannot continue to serve effectively in a position that demands the highest levels of leadership, responsibility and public accountability. He cannot continue to coach at Rutgers University. Therefore, Tim Pernetti and I have jointly decided to terminate Mike Rice’s employment at Rutgers.”

Glad he was fired this morning. It was inevitable once the video went public. Rutgers had no choice but to fire him. The backlash they would've received would've been too much. Plus, no recruit in their right mind would've committed to that program after seeing that.
