Dale Ellis
Best off-balance almost out of bounds with Rasheed Wallace in his face 3 pt shooter : Sean Elliott
Dale Ellis
can't believe nobody else even considered that category
Elliott was great at those though
Dale Ellis, Chuck Person, Glenn Robinson, Doc Rivers, Antoine Carr.
For single seasons; played in the NBA/BAA; in the regular season; from 1946-47 to 2012-13; playing for the San Antonios Spurs (Tex/Dal); requiring 3-Pt Field Goal Attempts >= 50; sorted by descending 3-Pt Field Goal Pct.
Steve Smith
Matt Bonner
Danny Ferry
Brent Barry
Matt Bonner
Bruce Bowen
Matt Bonner
Richard Jefferson
Danny Green
So, my answer starts triply with Matt Bonner
Sorting the same list by FG% and eyeballing out Boris's putbacks, Tony's teardrops and Manu's paint pinballs and so on, and leaving in Ellis because I don't remember his game:
Dale Ellis
Vinnie Del Negro (surprised)
Matt Bonner
Patty Mills (surprised)
Brent Barry
George Hill (surprised)
Mario Elie
The combined conclusion is: Matt Bonner by landslide.
Noticeably absent players who didn't make as high of a % as I expected.
Steve Kerr
Gary Neal
Hedo Turkoglu
And as a shooter, though admittedly in garbage time, Patty Mills > Gary Neal.
thumbs up
Robert Horry
Id just say (unscientifically) its either Mitc or Neal.
Only during the last 2 minutes of the game.
For you old schoolers....Louie Dampier.
I can't understand everyone saying Ellis and Person, as they weren't that great of shooters in the postseason when people actually guard you. I mean any kind of reasonable performance from Person in 95 and the Spurs likely put a banner up that year. And Smith and Ferry don't belong there either for their chokes. Iceman is definitely the greatest shooter this team ever had inside the arc. Outside I'm going to go Finley, even though Kerr shot 83.3%from the three in the 02-03 playoffs (his other two playoffs with the Spurs were awful though). Green, Neal, and Barry definitely have to be on that list too.
Ice
Ellis over Kerr from three? I completely disagree.
You realize Steve Kerr has the record for best career 3pt%%? By definition he's the best 3pt shooter ever in terms of efficient shooting.
Ellis' best 3pt% season: 47.8%
Ellis' Career: 40.3%
Times 43% or higher: 3
Kerr's best 3pt% season: 52.4% (over 50% 4 times)
Kerr's career: 45.4%
Times 43% or higher: 10
Ellis only has 2 seasons shooting higher % than Kerr's career average. With the Spurs, they shot almost the exact same 3pt% (just under 40%), but Kerr's seasons with us were 4 of the last 5 of his career, while Ellis' 2 seasons with us was in the middle of his career.
I have to give the nod to Kerr. If you're just talking about 3pt volume, then Danny Green is better than Dale Ellis. Last 2 seasons: 43-44% from three, average about 1 more 3pt make per game than Ellis did with us too.
In fact Danny Green will probably go down as our best 3pt shooter if we're talking volume and % just with the Spurs. He's shooting better than both Kerr and Ellis did with us in both makes per game and %.
i thought about ice but i just consider him the best scorer we ever had. he was just balls out offensively. as you said, an artist.George Gervin shot a phenomenal FG% for a guard. In his NBA career of ten years, he averaged .511%. Those are percentages usually seen only in bigs on the front line. Not to mention the absolute artistry of many of his shots.
Yeah, I have to agree, but the question we have to ask:
is "best shooter" = "who can make a shot if left completely open?" or " "who can make a shot even if somewhat defended (not to be confused with guys that create their own shot)?"
Ellis gets my vote. As awesome as Kerr was, he and everyone else like him should be disqualified. There's a huge difference between having to get your own shots and an having other guys create your shots for you.
Michael Finley was very good.... before we signed him. He only had a couple of good seasons here but his jumpshoot was nice to watch.
I think you'd have categorize that differently. If I were a PG and I had two guys open, I'm passing it to the guy with the highest 3pt%. If I needed someone to jack up a contested three for me, you're giving it to a different guy, ya know?
I don't think Kobe is a good 3pt shooter, but he can obviously make that crazy fadeaway more often than normal shooters can. Neal's the best on the team at doing that sorta thing but Green is better at getting them in consistently via normal means.
Glenn Robinson?
Doc Rivers?
Antoine Carr?
You obviously don't know about the game of basketball.

Started watching Spurs games faithfully only in 2009 and so I'm just curious if Kerr played significant playing time during the regular season or only during the playoffs. 'Cause I watched Open Court days ago and heard Kerr said that it was only when Parker got stomach virus in the 2003 playoffs that he got the opportunity to play. As we know, he surely relished the moment but I'm very curious if was part of the rotation or was just a situational player.
Definitely agree, shooting percentage and scoring both in ABA and NBA.
