did you know that that light, x rays, and other waves can not be emitted at an arbitrary rate, but only in certain packets that are called quanta

    hence, the quantum hypothesis

Ok, then pull out your old mass spectrometer and check out the wavelengths emitted by different elements as electrons jumping to a lower orbital emit quanta to act as a release of energy.

Instantaneous, as in: "she instantaneously became more attractive at the flick of a switch."

If a pulse of light is emitted at a particular time at a particular point in space, then as time goes on it will spread out as a sphere of light whose size and position are independent of the speed of the source. After one millionth of a second the light will have spread out to form a sphere with a radius of 300 meters; after two millionths of a second, the radius will be 600 meters; and so on.

Yes, but if a train leaves Chicago going southbound, and passes a train going northbound, will the light from the headlight of the oncoming train be traveling faster than the speed of light?

    You are correct.

Would you be able to tell if the other train was moving relative to you?

OK...one nerd rode up to another nerd on his new bike. "WOW! What a neat bike! Where did you get it?"

"Well, this beautiful woman rode up to me, jumped off the bike, ripped off all her clothes and said 'Take what you want!' So I did."

Good question, I'd say no because I think nothing can travel faster than that certain speed including objects.

An object can in fact never reach the speed of light, because by then its mass would have become infinite, and by the equivalence of mass and energy, it would have taken an infinite amount of energy to get it there. So I dont think that help from an object moving would boost light's speed. But Im not sure so Im probably wrong.

Whats cool to think about is some stars that we see at night might not even be there anymore, but their light is just now reaching earth

yeah... light from the nearest star (Alpha Centauri) takes a little more than 4 years to reach Earth

If the sun blew up then we wouldn't feel its effects right away because it takes 8 minutes for light to reach Earth from the Sun
