Sure they will if they want to lure him away from SA. He's a restricted free agent and the Spurs hold his Early Bird rights.
bobcats model their org after spurs
spurs treat their players right
they know he wants playing time and they will tell the bobcats what is going on and they will sign him
bobcats will not have to spend alot on him and sign him for alot of years either
Sure they will if they want to lure him away from SA. He's a restricted free agent and the Spurs hold his Early Bird rights.
Now we have a decent list of possibilities for the back up and third string SF position
Back Up SF:
Al Harrington
Josh Childress
Gerald Wallace
Matt Barnes
Glenn Robinson
Rodney White
Third String:
LJIII
Johnsen
Maurice Evans
Theron Smith
Toni Kukoc
what do you guys think of that list? please add your picks and suggestions

Add Theron Smith to the 3rd string list.
Barring a trade, Big Dog, Kukoc and Barnes are the leading backup 3 candidates as of today, in my opinion.
UCLA baby!
Get Barnes and Tyus Edney at the backup point and we're golden. Heh.
This may be true, but what has he done in the NBA?
He hasn't had much of an opportunity to do anything in the NBA yet. He's a young player who is just getting started. That's why we are talking about bringing him in and molding him. This may be true, but what has he done in the NBA?
That'd be taking a risk though...
Yeah, we are talking about players for very little money to fill out the roster. Not much of a risk in that.
Kukoc sucks.
I wouldn't mind Barnes in a Spurs uniform at all. The guy hustles.
Hmmm...the Spurs have one active roster spot and that is earmarked for either Finley or Brown. All the Spurs would have to offer Barnes would be the LLE and the opportunity, perhaps next season, of making the active roster. He'd be great insurance to have but I would guess that Sacto would have an active roster spot and minutes to offer him, as well the ability to play in his hometown.
Still, getting Finley for the rest of the MLE and Barnes for the LLE would be pretty damn sweet.
Barnes would probably sign somewhere for the minimum. I don't think he's looking for money this season. He's looking for somewhere to learn and grow as a player.
The Spurs could put him through the Stephen Jackson program. Well, without the starter's role in the 2nd season...
I wonder if the Spurs signed him if he would want to cover his 'Sacramento's Finest" tattoo on his arm ala Iverson.
I remember when he played at UCLA, he was pretty bad ass.
Now that the Spurs have signed NVE and regardless of what Finley does, how serious are the Spurs about Barnes?
scenario 1) finley comes to the spurs.
finley joins NVE and oberto as one of our great summer acquisition. the wings rotation is now bowen 34; manu 28; brent 33; finley 32. Obviously this rotation is amazing but also count for an average age of 31 3/4. a rule of thumb is you want any rotation to be an average 30. therefor the last wing should be a younger player.
Then
- since finley can play 3 but is mostly a 2 even if in the spurs rotation it is not so obvious
- beno, NVE and tony can all play some minutes in a small line up at the 2.
the 5th wings should be a 3
Finally they would arguably have no money left for anything other than a minimum contract and they would not re-sign brown.
a young and long 3 accepting minimum money to get a future opportunity and bring fresh blood to an aging rotation fits perfectly Barnes
adding he worked out for the spurs at least 3 days last week and he worked half of the year on his shot only he is more than serious
scenario 2) spurs do not get finley
this case is a lot more complex. cause brown might not be a done deal in this scenario. Restate all the reason above without the age factor and if devin gets too expensive Barnes will rapidly see a spur offer. even if brown is signed, i do not see him as a possible bowen replacement for size problem and not sure a starterin this league. barnes would be in to compete with brown and make sure one of the 2 develop in what we need.
To summarize I think barnes is clearly a spurs priority behind finley and brown. and even in scenario 2 ahead of brown. the fact that no other interesting prospect not involving ST are available at the same quality/price is even more telling.
Concerning the Sacramento part:
Barnes said he would play only for sacramento or Spurs and i think it is still 50/50.
Barnes is putting sacramento ahead on his wish list but his career might push to the contrary however.
stuck behind Peja (only 28) in sacramento he has close to no chance to start in the next... um never unless peja is traded or lost to FA which is less than likely now that sacramento is contender le again (SAR+Bonzi)
In San Antonio he has a chance to become a starter in 2 yearsand spend his prime (he would be 27 when starting role) starting for a le contender...
i think the heart says kings and the head will say spurs...
hard choice
I like the part about the 2 year apprenticeship. I think it's important to target that wing player and begin developing him now.
anyonelse on this? do you also think barnes has more chance than finley or brown to be a spurs? or you think he can be replaced by theron smith or demarr johnson?
I thought I saw where Pop said today they'd sign Devin if they couldn't get Finley.
Barnes would be a guy they might sign as a minimum player to fill out the inactive list. It wouldn't have anything to do with the signing of Devin/Finley.
