I don't like PS's controller designs. I LOVE the ones for X-Box. I think it is because colors AND shapes are too much for my brain to process. With the X-box, it is just colors.

But at any rate, the controllers are why I will not be purchasing any version of the Playstation. X-box only.

Sony sets Nov. 17 launch for PlayStation 3 in U.S.

    By Kim Peterson

In this handout photo from Sony Computer Entertainment America, Phil Harrison, President of Worldwide Studios, left, demonstrates the new PlayStation 3 game controller while Ken Kutaragi, President and Group C.E.O. of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc., looks on during the Sony Computer Entertainment America E3 2006 press event today in Culver City, Calif.

LOS ANGELES — Sony said Monday it will debut its PlayStation 3 console in North America on Nov. 17, about a week after it begins selling the system in Japan.

The company will sell two versions of the console based on the storage capacity of included hard drives: a 20-gigabyte hard-drive system will cost $499, and a 60-gigabyte version will cost $100 more.

Executives also announced Sony would ship 4 million systems by the end of the year and 6 million by the end of March. That production schedule, if met, would beat what Microsoft has been able to ship with its competing Xbox 360 system, which debuted in November.

Microsoft says it's on track to sell between 4.5 million and 5.5 million consoles worldwide by the end of June.

Sony also plans to start selling the PS3 on Nov. 17 in Europe and Australia.

A near-simultaneous global launch is unprecedented in the industry. Previous launches have been done over several months.

"PlayStation 3 is the most ambitious project we at Sony Computer Entertainment have ever undertaken," said Chief Executive Kaz Hirai, speaking at a news conference two days before the start of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the video-game industry's largest annual conference.

Compe ors Nintendo and Microsoft plan similar news conferences today.

Sony has placed an enormous bet on the PS3, successor to the dominant PlayStation 2 console. The system is more expensive than the Xbox 360, in part because Sony is including a Blu-Ray video player as a standard feature in every system. The player is designed to handle the large-capacity discs that are the successor to DVD technology.

Adding the player made the PS3 harder to produce and likely contributed to the release date being pushed back from this spring to November. But Sony hopes the PS3 becomes the entertainment hub of the home, bringing video games, movies, music and even online shopping to one central device.

    advertising
Microsoft is endorsing a rival high-definition video player, HD-DVD, but did not include it in its Xbox 360 system. The company is expected to give more details today about the HD-DVD player accessory it will soon sell for the Xbox 360.

Microsoft sells two versions of the Xbox 360, priced at $299 and $399. The higher-priced version has a 20-gigabyte detachable hard drive, which can be used to store digital songs and photos and saved-game components.

The PlayStation 2 leads the current generation of video gaming. Since the console's launch in March 2000, Sony has shipped about 104 million units: 23 million in Asia, 42 million in North America and 39 million in Europe.

By comparison, Microsoft has shipped 24 million Xbox systems worldwide since Xbox's debut in November 2001.

Sony hopes it will maintain its lead with the PlayStation 3, even though Microsoft's Xbox 360 will have had a full year on store shelves before PS3's debut.

Sony executives described a vast network being built into the PS3, one that includes connectivity with the handheld PlayStation Portable player released last year. A person playing a car-racing game on the PS3, for example, can power up a PSP at the same time to watch the race from different angles.

The PS3 will have built-in online capability, with an e-commerce element that allows players to buy new levels and other features. Players can buy prepaid cards at stores to purchase items.

"Online and network will become like air conditioning in a car," Hirai said. "Once upon a time it was an after-market option, but today it's a standard feature."

Sony unveiled a number of games being created for the PS3, including several first-person shooter les — a staple of the video-game business.

In an unexpected twist, Sony said the PS3 will come standard with a motion-sensitive controller. Players can rotate the controller during a flying game, for example, and a plane would correspond in midair.

"We're really starting to push what this machine is capable of, but we still have along way to go," said Phil Harrison, president of worldwide studios for Sony Computer Entertainment.

Considering blu ray players (which the PS3 can play) are around $1000, I don't think that's too bad.

Plus they just demonstrated at E3 the new controller which is a total Wii killer.

When Sony announced the PlayStation 3 at last year's E3, one of the most impressive parts of the machine was its specs. The console was a gearhead's dream with three Ethernet parts, two HDMI ports, six USB ports, and a host of other features. Many wondered how Sony could pack so much into a sleek box and still price the system compe ively.

How things have changed in a year.

According to the latest specifications released by Sony, the PS3 now only comes with one Ethernet port and four USB ports. Also, the lack of a second HDMI port means that the dual-screen setup running 1080p function that was shown off last year is no longer a possibility.

The PlayStation 3 will come in two configurations, one will have a 20GB hard drive and the other will have a 60GB hard drive. However, losing 40GB isn't the only downgrade with the 20GB version. The 20GB version, priced at $499, will not have Memory Stick, SD, or Compact Flash inputs, Wi-Fi capabilities, or any HDMI output.

The new motion-sensitive controller, included standard in both the 20GB and 60GB models, will lack a feature that was present in the PlayStation 2's DualShock 2 controller--vibration. Citing the new "six-degree," a statement from Sony says "vibration itself interferes with information detected by the sensor."

The removal of vibration could also have something to do with the lawsuit won by Immersion Technologies, which sued Sony for copyright infringement based on the rumble feature in PlayStation controllers. Microsoft faced a similar suit, but settled out of court.

Time and time again Sony lies to it's fans. The sad thing is people like you keep apologizing for them.

If you go with the cheaper one you miss out on more,No HDMI=NO blu ray movies in high def as those are only threw that port.

Initially they were both scheduled for an early release date. Microsoft hauled ass to get the 360 into production, then Sony went and delayed the release date a year. The 360 didn't have enough systems and games to put into production and Sony just sat back and observed all the mistakes the 360 was making.

They're coming out with a deeper game catalog, but it seems the the new blue ray technology is ing them over. It's way too expensive for it's own good. I know early indications are that it will be 500, but even at that price, Sony is underpricing it. I wouldn't be suprised if it was bumped up to 600 by the release date.

The Nintendo Wii or Revolution or whatever the it's calling itself now should be okay. They gave up on focusing graphics and accepted that they can't compete with the PS3 or 360 on that. I read they are going to have a deep ass game catalog, along with options on downloading early Nintendo games. You can downoad an individual game liek Super Mario 3 for 9.99 or have a monthly subscription for 14.99. The prices for Nintendo are going to be low as usual. That new controller is going to be awesome too. Its time for something different. Graphics only go so far. I like the 360 graphics, but I haven't touched the system since Fight night 3 came out months ago

Sony to Sell PlayStation 3 for $499
    By MATT RICHTEL

LOS ANGELES, May 8 — Sony said on Monday that it planned to sell the base model of its PlayStation 3 video game console for $499, a price that industry analysts said could put it at a compe ive disadvantage to rival Microsoft and its Xbox 360.

Sony said that it also planned to sell a higher-priced model with a larger hard drive for $599.

The console will be released on Nov. 11 in Japan and Nov. 17 in United States and Europe, Sony executives said. It will cost about $536 in Japan and $636 in Europe.

The release date and prices, made public at a flashy news conference in Los Angeles, were disclosed with pomp and cir stance, befitting Sony's vigorous effort to keep itself fresh in the minds of video game players.

Sony said it planned to ship six million consoles by the end of March 2007, including two million when the system is introduced in the fall.

The company had originally expected to begin selling the PlayStation 3 this spring, but said in March that it would postpone the release until November. The delay has given a full-year lead to Microsoft, which introduced its Xbox 360 last November.

The 360 sells at two prices, $299 for a basic system and $399 for a ramped up one.

Paul Jackson, a video game industry analyst with Forrester Research, said the price of the PlayStation would put Sony at a compe ive disadvantage to Microsoft. The consoles will sell out at first because of the cult of PlayStation users, he said. But after that, he said, prices will have to come down quickly.

At its announcement, Sony executives tried to make the case that the PlayStation 3 would be the most advanced game system to date, with enough features to justify its price.

Some of the game players, analysts and journalists gathered at the news conference said they were not convinced.

The system "is as expensive as I expected, and that is to say it is outrageously expensive," said Chris Kohler, a freelance video game journalist and avid game player who lives in San Francisco. He said that Sony did not make a sufficient case that the console's features justify the cost. "They didn't show it today."

He added, "What they showed looked very much like the games you can get on the 360."

Sony also said for the first time that the hand-held controllers supplied with the games will enable players to manipulate activity on their television screens. For example, players will be able tilt their hands to make an airplane move to the left or right, or roll.

Even at the price announced on Monday, Sony will probably sell the PlayStation systems at a substantial discount to what it costs to make them, analysts said. The gap is attributable to the high cost of the console's components, notably its powerful cell processor and a high-definition DVD format called Blu-ray.

But the economics of the video game business can potentially support a model in which console makers subsidize their machines because they can make a lot of money by collecting royalty fees for games sold for those consoles. And further, Sony cannot afford to price its console too much higher than the 360.

The news conference was timed to coincide with the industry's big annual trade show, an immersion into high-technology sensory overload known as E3, which starts Wednesday at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The other console makers, Microsoft and Nintendo, have scheduled announcements for Tuesday.

The business stakes are immense for all three, and for the hundreds of companies that make video games and accessories for the consoles, as well as the investors banking that the industry will continue to grow.

Perhaps no company is in the spotlight this week like Sony. It is the reigning heavyweight champion of console makers, with its PlayStation 2 having sold more than 100 million units since it was introduced in 2000.

Its dominance has been challenged by Microsoft, which sold around one-quarter that many Xboxes.

Microsoft's introduction of the 360 was met with consumer enthusiasm, and a caveat. The company initially sold as many consoles as it could make, but that turned out not necessarily to be a function just of customer demand but also of Microsoft production snags that limited supply.

Still, Michael Pachter, a video game industry analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities, said Microsoft would probably have sold 10 million Xbox 360 consoles by the time the PlayStation 3 reaches the market.

Sony said it decided to delay the console's release to allow software developers to create games that take better advantage of the powerful processor and graphics technology of the PlayStation 3.

Yet the delay has been painful for those software makers and their investors. Companies like Electronic Arts, a big video game maker, have said that the slower-than-expected transition to a new generation of consoles is one reason they are in a significant sales slump that it appears will last for at least a year.

As for Sony, whether it can take over Microsoft's early lead depends in part on a business battle that is somewhat tangential to the console compe ion. In promoting Blu-ray as a high-definition DVD format, Sony is in a pitched battle with Toshiba, which is promoting a rival technological standard.

If Toshiba wins out, Sony's heavy investment in Blu-ray, and its inclusion in the PlayStation 3, could wind up being a costly mistake. But if Blu-ray prevails, users could be drawn to the PlayStation 3 in part for its ability to play vivid movies.

"Blu-ray is going to decide it," Mr. Pachter said of the console wars. "Consumers will pay more for a Blu-ray drive if we believe it has value."

He added that he thought Sony would prevail. "Sony's going to kill Toshiba because it has to," he said.

Dude they are sellilng the PS3 at $600... there's a $499 version and a $599 version of the system.

And the only reason Nintendo is going to be alright is not because of the controller since Sony basically has the same now but because of the price... Nintendo more than likely is going to sell the Wii for $199 like they always do with their systems when they launch it.

WII will be cheaper because it will only have about 25% of the transistor count of the PS3 and it's cell CPU.

Since the company that I am putting together will be selling X360 games Of course I need to root for X360...

i am gonna get the nintendo, i am a sucker for super mario and zelda games. i haven't got the new DS mario game but my friend has a hacked ds and said it's incredible. i really liked mario kart ds and castlevania - dawn of sorrow. mario kart on the DS just about gave me carpal tunnel though... the slides kiled my hands. i wish it was just a little bigger. nintendo made a good decision not to compete graphics wise - i'll take smooth lower res graphics at a constant FPS anyday. zelda: wind walker was gorgeous, and ran incredibly smooth. if i want high res graphics i'll upgrade my video card in my pc. i always also thought the rumble feature was highly overrated in video games, i turned it off most of the time.
