The name Kirby originated from s' pronunciation of the name Kobe imho, which had a long history. while the name Jim or Tammy only came into existence after Duncan's sexual orientation went public.

Jim is not a good nickname. Kirby is mainly because it's a funny sounding word. When you say it, you laugh because you think of some goofy person who is probably named Kirby or the Nintendo game character.

I assume it's the latter. Kirby's signature move was sucking in the skill set of his opponents thus gaining their abilities, which was why he often dressed like Mario/Link. So..... basically what Kobe made his career off of
