Pau is a better player overall, who has been woefully misused by the Lakers. But Splitter is the best defender and is a better complement for Duncan. Besides, Splitter's contract (frontloaded in a sense) and spread out for a few years makes him more necessary than Gasol whose is expiring now and who could bolt in free agency.
No reason why the Spurs trade Splitter for Gasol. Now, if Gasol is salary waived when the foolhardy Lakers realise how bad they are in March? Hmm...
