Thanks, haven't heard much about it
The protesters are claiming that before the violence there were a million people that showed up. Of course the state poo poo's that. That is why it reminds me of Egypt. Following much the same path. Popular uprising is the new world trend.

People died yesterday and the day before. Yanukovich is a er, I tremble to think of what he might do to restore public order, which has obviously been broken. Police and citizenry are fighting.

I've been busy, haven't been following it. Unfortunately, that part of the world is well known for being familiar to violence, war and corruption. I doubt this is new to them, but on the other hand, still a ty situation.

IMO, not that unexpected since Russia has been re-gaining some of it's footing under Putin.

the unrest has become regional. some subsidiary outpost of Ukraine was overcome by massed (and presumably armed) citizenry, I heard, but these first reports are always sketchy.

I expect that Russia will prop up the regime but I don't think he is going to go Soviet Hungary or the like.

“Dear subscriber, you are registered as a participant in a mass disturbance.”

That's a text message that thousands of Ukrainian protesters spontaneously received on their cell phones today, as a new law prohibiting public demonstrations went into effect. It was the regime's police force, sending protesters the perfectly dystopian text message to accompany the newly minted, perfectly dystopian legislation. In fact, it's downright Orwellian (and I hate that adjective, and only use it when absolutely necessary, I swear).

But that's what this is: it's technology employed to detect noncompliance, to hone in on dissent. The NY Times reports that the "Ukrainian government used telephone technology to pinpoint the locations of cell phones in use near clashes between riot police officers and protesters early on Tuesday." Near. Using a cell phone near a clash lands you on the regime's hit list.

Ukraine corporations allied with the govt, just like in USA

Many people in Kiev awoke Tuesday morning to a frightening text message on their phones. “Dear subscriber, you are registered as a participant in a mass disturbance,”

Using widely available technology, Ukraine’s dominant carriers have reportedly helped the government pinpoint the locations of their customers. Anyone with a cellphone in the vicinity of recent protests was added to a list and sent the intimidating text.

The incident is just one in a growing number of attacks on Internet users. It’s a troubling sign that the information age has entered a new era — one where our rights to connect and communicate are under constant siege.

Armed men seized the parliament in Ukraine's Crimea region on Thursday and raised the Russian flag, alarming Kiev's new rulers, who urged Moscow not to abuse its navy base rights on the peninsula by moving troops around.

Crimea, the only Ukrainian region with an ethnic Russian majority, is the last big bastion of opposition to the new leadership in Kiev since President Viktor Yanukovich was ousted at the weekend and provides a base for Russia's Black Sea fleet.

Yanukovich said on Thursday he was still president of Ukraine and warned its "illegitimate" rulers that people in the southeastern and southern regions would never accept mob rule.

In a statement sent to Russian news agencies from an unknown location, Yanukovich railed against the "extremists" who had stolen power in Ukraine, threatened violence against himself and his closest aides and passed "illegal" law

Not that this means anything other than being extremely funny, but Sarah Palin predicted this would happen if Obama was elected.

I also like how Putin asked permission from the Russian congress before he acted. If this were the USA and Mexico, the president would just go in.
