he ran on the platform of "hope" and "change" but kept and expanded the same policies as bush (namely the patriot act...). if he really wanted to promote change, he'd challenge mega-corps, promote legalization of marijuana, speak more about peace instead of going after people, promote equal rights, and use his status as a biracial american to stop the racist politically-correct tone that america employs every day. we're all americans, regardless of our skin color. instead he ballooned the status quo and made it more acceptable to the public.
we have yet to see how obamacare pans out, but it's a very intimidating piece of legislation that laypersons have yet to really understand fully. let's hope the government does and is able to work in the same proximity as healthcare professionals on the matter.
really the evident change to me is that obama shattered that wall between the presidency and pop culture. i don't know if i'm comfortable with that change yet. i understand that it's a great PR move to be a cool president and be directly involved within the public sphere (talk shows, guest appearances, the first lady doing SNL style skits), taking the most vacation time ever, but then again the most difficult job in america warrants a strict professional standard. the world is watching...
i guess the main issue is how conservative he ended up playing his presidency (with the exception of healthcare, which has been one of the main focuses of the democratic party for decades) and subsequently ostracizing much of his support base who elected him. then you have conservatives who won't like him strictly on party terms.
for me the whole race issue is disturbing on both sides of the argument. i detest the "one drop" rule of being black. you should claim whatever you want to be, and no one should judge you or lift you up based on your skin color or denomination. it's a sad world when people are partial or impartial to someone just because their looks or background is a novelty.
i think overall he is an OK president by making the status quo more accepting to the public. honestly i really like how he handled the economic situation, though i'd like to see more taxes and less debt imo. however, no matter who the president is, US citizens should scrutinize him/her and keep close watch because he/she represents our nation. once we start building up public leaders as idols then we're no different than countries who are suppressed by dictators.
