Listen...I really don't want to think that hard right before I go to bed. I want stupid wit, quick jokes, and fun skits. Colbert is none of this. My brain is in relax/shut down mode at this time.

You people do realize he's done other things besides his Colbert Report schtick, right?
Anyone who watched Comedy Central before it turned ty would remember him from Strangers With Candy and Exit 57.... he was also on the Dana Carvey Show....
He was a gay version of his normal character in strangers with candy. Not that he wasn't funny, he was awesome in that
Dude has some range. Was even pretty effective as a bad guy on L&O: Criminal Intent. Network late night shows, however -- especially the earlier time slots -- are where actual comedy goes to die. good career move, but there will never be anything like The Colbert Report again. Can't believe it's been nine years.
Guess they'll try to give John Oliver a nightly show.
I wonder how long of a deal he signed with HBO for his weekly show.
For all the people who ask about it not being Jon Stewart, I think that he probably did not want to be tied down to that schedule. He has a lot of leeway with Comedy Central and was able to take off an entire summer to direct a movie. He could never do that on CBS. Plus, I think he likes being able to do what he does on his show, and he could never do that on a regular Late Night Show on CBS. Same for Craig Ferguson who would have had to change his whole schtick.
I'm sure he won't be in character
