I still can't help but wonder what the TRUE condition of this guys knee is, though.

As it's been stated before, the scar tissue that was discovered in his physical is something that has been there throughout his entire career. It came from an injury that he sustained through college, healed completely (minus the scar tissue, which is not that uncommon with any sort of serious injury) and has never caused a problem as long as he has been in the NBA. It was there when he played his first game, and it will be there when he plays his last game. That doesn't necessarily mean that it will ever be an issue.

I understand that this may have been a subject of concern to New Jersey, one they wanted to look into further before obligating themselves to a contract. However, there was apparently some major snafoo in PR, which was demonstrated in the news article where Rahim came out and publicly stated that he didn't appreciate the way he was being treated, and didn't want to play for New Jersey.

So I'm just left to wonder one thing: how much of this drop has to do with the 'problem' with his knee, and how much of it has to do with his desire to play (or not play, as the case may be) for the Nets?

He wants to play for the Nets. He turned down an offer of about $10M more from the Bucks. He only made the comments about not playing for them after they questioned his health.

Understood, but couldn't those comments have influenced their CURRENT decision of dropping him?

Perhaps they were just looking into the matters further, until he came out and made the statements that he did. Then they decided to add 2 and 2 together, and did not like the way that 4 was looking.

All I'm asking is...was it really 2+2? Or more like...1+3? Or, if his knee ended up not being as bad as they speculated, maybe even 0+4?

....for someone who hates math metaphors, I really shouldn't be using them.

I think Dex is referring to NJ not wanting to sign a guy who just said he doesn't want to play there.

It seems that Nets must use the Trade exception today.
Rumors say they get Marc Jackson for the TE and a 2nd rounder.

    edit : it's official

    http://www.nba.com/sixers/news/jackson_050809.html

Philadelphia 76ers President Billy King announced today that the Sixers have traded forward Marc Jackson and an undisclosed amount of cash to the New Jersey Nets in exchange for a conditional second round pick in the 2006 NBA Draft.

In five NBA seasons, the 6-foot-10 forward has played with three different teams: Golden State (2000-02), Minnesota (2002-03) and Philadelphia (2003-05), averaging 9.0 points and 4.7 rebounds in 267 games (71 starts). Last season, Jackson averaged 12.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in a career-high 81 games (23 starts) with the 76ers, while shooting 46.5 percent (340-731 FG) from the field.

Drafted by Golden State in the second round (38th overall pick) of the 1997 NBA Draft after his junior season at Temple University, Jackson played three seasons internationally - Tofas Bursa (Turkey) in 1997-98, Lobos Caja Cantabria (Spain) in 1998-99 and Cantabria Lobos (Spain) in 1999-00. He joined the Warriors for the 2000-01 season, when he earned a selection to the NBA All-Rookie Team and finished third in the balloting for NBA Rookie of the Year.

If we got him for half price....
``We were notified by New Jersey this afternoon that they were rescinding the sign and trade for Shareef Abdur Rahim,'' Trail Blazers general manager John Nash said Tuesday. ``They cited some concerns after a physical examination and believe that rescinding the trade is in their best interest. The contract that was agreed to with Shareef becomes null and void and he is now a free agent.''

He's a free agent. Will he take the MLE to prove he's not damaged goods?

    Ouch.

    SARS to San Antonio?

Let the sparks fly ... again.

Honestly, why would one expect the professional judgement of Dr Schultz in San Antonio to be any different than the team of sports medicine doctors in NJ.

If he didn't pass the Nets physical, then I doubt many other teams will be jumping all over him.

I don't think this is a case of the Nets getting cold feet about him. They really wanted him; his knee must be of concern. Lawrence Frank was at SAR's house at midnight when free agency began.
Exactly; why would Schultz put his reputation on the line. What's to be gained if he's right and the Spurs hit on SAR? Everybody already knows he's the best. If he's wrong -- then everybody blames him.

Let's see, smart money says ... door number 1.

This is ridiculous. Reef has never missed a game due to a knee injury in his entire career. He has some scar tissue from an injury he suffered in high school and the Nets seem to think it could potentially be arthritic. It has not caused him any problems to date though.
Agreed, which makes this appear that the Nets had second thoughts and are using the failed physical as their way out of the trade.

Well that article was pretty misleading. The le of it: "I DON'T WANT TO BE A NET" wasn't even a quote by Shareef. He said, "Right now I don't feel I want to be a Net." To me, that's a huge difference. I hated that article.

Since he's not going to the Nets shouldn't that one VBookie be void/invalid?

Yeah, don't get me wrong. I read the article, and I agree with where you're coming from about it. I was just wondering how much of it was just hyped-up propaganda, and how much of it wasn't.

Does them dropping him mean that they found that something IS, in fact, wrong with his knee....or did they drop him just because of how he feels about the organization now?

I suppose they referenced the whole physical thing, so that's what they're standing behind with their actions. I just cant help but wonder if there isn't anything else going on behind the scenes.

If it really is all about his health, then SAR is going to have a tough remainder of an offseason ahead of him.

I doubt he had any long term ill feelings for the organization BEFORE they dropped him. He's been close with Lawrence Frank for a long time. I think this is just about NJ management being gun shy of injuries as ChumpDumper said earlier in this thread.

People don't forget that he's only 28 going on 29. His health isn't going to decrease over a year. The word "potentially" is a tricky one. Like we all know, he's never missed a single game because of his knees. But I understand the Nets concerns. They already burned themselves on Alonzo and his contract.

Who knows after 5 years. Maybe Shareef will be retired because of his knees, but you can't put a label on him like he's damaged goods.I'm sure Pop and R.C. would welcome him with open arms if they could work out a deal for him. 5 years is too long of a contract IMO for a 28-29 year old guy that has shaky knees. I would be happy to offer him 2-3 years, but I'm pretty sure he's not looking for a deal that short.
