They are paying him a year earlier when they didn't have to. He does owe them in a way.
That's the Rockets decision due to trying to clear capspace... has nothing to do with Parsons.

Yeah, honestly a Mavs team with Parsons is better than a HOU team with Parson (assuming) they stay pat tbh.

If he likes the contract and the organization then I don't see why he waits to sign an offer sheet. Maybe he's pressured to wait by Dwight or something, but I say sign it if Cubes is willing to fork over the cash.
Agreed. Mavs biggest issue right now is a compe ive SF... but you put Parsons and back him up with Marion, and they have that solved.

Felton/Ellis/Parsons/Dirk/Chandler plus Vince/Marion off the bench with Carlisle coaching

    >

Beverly/Harden/Parson/Jones/Howard plus Lin/Daniesls off the bench with McFail coaching

    tbh.

Parsons asked to be paid a year early. It had nothing to do with trying to clear space.

Parsons is good. The kind of guy that the Spurs typically pickup and make a stud.

I think if the Mavs roll with Felton, they're making a huge mistake. They need to trade him for a steady hand. Nothing shinny or special, just a guy that can distribute the ball and play some defense.

Yeah, if I were Cuban, I'd plant a couple of glocks in Felton's car and tip off his probation officer tbh.

of course it has everything to do with clearing capspace and chasing stars. They're not going to give him a raise if they don't have to.

Parsons had zero say on the team declining picking up his option. It's a gamble Houston took all on it's own. I'm just wondering what the bonus is going to be so he doesn't sign off that sheet of paper.

Makes the hits smaller down the line but much larger than it otherwise would be this year, although if he waits before signing an offer sheet it could offset that. But it's ultimately one less year of potential control
If they give him a declining contract, it could help offset the increasing contracts of Harden, Howard and Melo. That's a big deal. They'll have plenty of time to address his contract before a team can even give him an offer sheet.

Declining the option resulted in less cap space.

I thought that let's them offer a bigger deal to the Bosh/Melo of the world?

Wouldn't be a bad signing, but Parsons is really soft, tbh..typical White player hype, though..

No, the opposite. His current cap hold is considerably higher than his former salary.

    Woj had it wrong then?

For the Rockets, there are two distinct advantages to letting Parsons into restricted free agency now. First, Houston is determined to clear the necessary salary cap space this summer to chase a third maximum contract free agent to join Dwight Howard and James Harden, league sources tell Yahoo Sports.

Houston plans to pursue the major stars who could be available upon opting out of deals, including Miami's LeBron James and Chris Bosh, and New York's Carmelo Anthony, league sources said. Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki is expected to be a target too.

The Rockets are pursuing Minnesota's Kevin Love in trade talks too, and Parsons could hold sign-and-trade possibilities.

In one scenario, Houston could secure three max-out players – including Howard, Harden and a potential star free agent – and then re-sign Parsons to an extension below the max-level range. Parsons could command in the $12 million to $13 million annual range, league executives tell Yahoo Sports.

Hmmm... this one mentions he doesn't matter for cap-space considerations:

Declining Parsons' option would not have an impact on the Rockets' plans to chase another high-profile player this summer. The Rockets are expected to be active in the trade market, looking either to acquire a star -- they have high interest in Kevin Love if the Minnesota Timberwolves decide to trade him -- or to clear salary-cap space to sign one.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Rockets believe they may be able to trade Jeremy Lin and/or Omer Asik in potential deals for a star player or to offload their contracts for salary-cap space.

Also, couldn't the Rockets just offer an extension to Parsons earlier? And the only reason they wouldn't do that is so that new salary doesn't count towards the cap?

Not yet eligible for an extension. Woj makes mistakes on salary cap stuff. This was about preserving Parsons as an asset by avoiding unrestricted free agency next summer.

ok, I see he's a $1.7m cap hold on Sham. Only $960k if they picked up the option. djohn2oo8 was right it's not capspace related.

Still don't see how Parsons owes the Rockets anything, tbh. If anything, this is the Rockets trying to avoid him becoming a free agent next summer.

I think it has to do with Parsons, last summer signed with Dwight's agent, Dan Fegan, which included a wink wink deal. And which got Dwight to the Rockets as well.

Which is why Parsons probably won't sign anything before they make a move. Probably a wink wink deal between him and Morey.
Funny how quickly you've gone from being desperate to keep Parsons to ting on him since he joined the Mavs....
